General CG Discussion / Re: Vantage and Corona
« on: 2024-02-19, 15:57:13 »
We don't know yet exactly how far things will get in this initial implementation, sorry. We'll only be able to tell as we get closer to release how this can/will be done.

Makes sense, thanks Tom.  I was thinking the Vantage might already take max camera paths via VRscenes outside of any 'corona specific' functionality, but I'm sure each integration is different...

Super cool news!

I'd be aiming to bake my final animations in Corona but do the initial animation draft(s) in Vantage.  Most of the time I see people animating the camera within Vantage...considering corona will only be able to talk to Vantage through VRScenes, will there be any way to do my animating of cameras within max and bake it to vantage so I can export an exact match?  That way there is exact parity when I bake out the final within corona\max and I could just swap the footage for the corona bake when the final comes around...

Thanks for any clarification!
Daniel

To answer your question, I run intel 550 cards for 10gbit.  I have noticed when running locally things tend to be snappier, but also my network never gets saturated so I am a little surprised by that.  As Juraj says, maybe it’s some inherent unfriendliness of Max towards networks. i know they don’t technically support it (but they also don’t support multiple instances either and I am sure we all do that :)

I noticed his laggy Corona moment is with a texture that is like 7k x 12k.  I recently discovered that a lot of my material editor lag (and IR startup) in corona was due to texture size.  I have a 10gb ethernet and all assets on nas are on ssd raids, but even still with 6k+ textures (or just large pngs etc) max was really slowing down bad when running corona IR or Material Editor.  I ran the pixamoon resize script and downsized all textures above 4mb (as a test) and holy cow it’s fast again.  So perhaps it’s something about Corona and large textures?  Not sure, it’s been so long since I used Fstorm I can’t compare directly.

Thanks Juraj for pointing Control Flow Guard, I've never heard of it and it was on on my machine.

I'm experiencing the same slowdowns here on Max 2023 and Corona 10HF2.

I've never tried Fstorm, and I love Corona except for two or three options that I really liked in VRay, especially the VRayToon effect, which is sorely lacking in Corona, but here's an interesting video that explains that Fstorm is faster than Corona in IR and shows Corona's lack of responsiveness (look at 1mn40s):

It's true that if the devs could improve the responsiveness of Corona, it would be a major advancement to focus on the artistic side instead of wasting time waiting for the machine's response.

If you look at the corona benchmark database you can compare ray/s which should correlate pretty well to render time.  The 7980x cranks about 33 million, whereas the fastest 3990x is 26 million....so closer to 25% faster rather than 300%.  I don't see any 7995x results yet but it certainly won't get you 3x the speed, I'd guess.

Just my two cents, I'm sure others who are more knowledgeable\better at math will chime in.

Hi Tom - Thanks for the response.  My main thing I'd be looking for is additional inputs\outputs for Near and Far (and maybe Inside.)

Here's my current scenario:  I'm doing a gravel path in a field.  I'm using corona distance to make the path and give it a subtle fade off to the 'roots and leaves' map I am using for the field.  But I have to do a corona distance for diffuse, bump, reflection, etc.  Just seems like it would be cool if there were a way to stack this into one node.  Maybe I'm being dumb about my method, and not sure how that would look graphically.  Perhaps my usage is odd enough it's not worth the time...

Pretty simple but would be great.  Same feature you already added to Corona colorcorrect etc. where you can add 'additional outputs' but added to Corona Distance map.  I often use this map for masking off paths etc and this would really help.

Thanks for considering!
Dan

Thanks Stefan and all, this is a treasure trove of info and those are some impressive plugins.

Honestly the biggest thing I am running into is bringing in Max models to C4D.  I have a large Connector library and only some of my models have universal formats like fbx and obj, many are just max. Curious if any of you all have recommendations there, especially if I totally ditch the max license thus losing the ability to export out.  Not a deal breaker but would be nice to keep my model library as useful as possible.

Wow this is all fantastic feedback, thank you all so much.  That's a very helpful video, as well.  Seems like there are viable alternatives to most\all of the plugins I currently use.  I still haven't fully wrapped my head around mograph but what I've seen makes it look pretty cool.  Max has been 'OK' for our animations but scrubbing the timeline is so chunky sometimes it'll drive you a little nuts.

A friend of mine who does non-archviz is always talking about Blender so it's good to know that's a non starter.  I think I'll pull the C4D thread a little more, it would be nice to get away from Max for a variety of reasons.

Thanks again, all!

Hello!  I do primarily arch viz stills and short films for a handful of regular clients.  I've been in business for 6 years or so.  Prior to that I used 3ds max as an architect and prior to that I used it as a student.  So I've been on the platform since 2009 or so.

Anyhow, I have heard a number of good things about Cinema4D and I like some of the features I see.  I've also been unimpressed with some aspects of Autodesk, from client relations, to speed of development, and stability and performance in larger arch viz exteriors.  Long story short, I'm tentatively exploring the ramifications of switching platforms to C4D while staying on Corona.  I'd need to find swaps for:  Forest pack, Railclone, my current snow plugin, bercontiles, and a handful of others.  And of course I would lose the advantage of my long term experience with Max.

Does anyone have a similar experience?  Or perhaps just feedback of Cinema4D stability\performance vs 3ds Max?  I'm a one man show, so switching wouldn't be insane but I’d like to get some feedback from others before doing more than just poking at some simple scenes.

Thanks for any feedback!

Another small crash:  using advanced wood OSL in max 2024 while switching 'axis' with IR running often results in a crash.  Been finding this map more and more useful and quickly toggling through the axis pretty much inevitably crashes IR.  Changing the wood tone sometimes crashes as well, but less frequently.

I realize there may not be full support for this particular OSL map but FYI and let me know if you want some reports.  Thanks

I am having a crash with RC 3 where I select a group of lights, hit 'make unique' and when it asks me 'make unique with respect to each other' it crashes every time when I click 'No.'  3ds Max 2024.1, RC3, Windows 10.  I'll try to see how small a scene it can be for sending and still crash, it's a fairly large scene and under NDA.  Just curious if anyone else has had similar issues in the meantime.

Hi Danio1011, I can see that your support ticket is assigned to the right team, so you will be assisted ASAP. I am sure the issue will be resolved by June 14, but even in case of some unforeseen difficulties, we will be able to apply some temporary solutions such as issuing an extra license. Please stay tuned and we will see if we can speed up the resolution for you.

Thanks Maru!  Kelsey reached out just now, so hopefully it will shake out now.  Appreciate the help!

They said this was resolved, but evidently not.  All my corona\phoenix licenses just went away.  If anyone is awake over at Chaos\Corona please help, I'm in the middle of a deadline and CIE now won't open.  Going to try activating a demo but I need to deliver this packet this evening...thanks.

EDIT:  For anyone following this rollercoaster, about five hours after my licenses went away I got a 'Thanks for your subscription!' email and my licenses were back.  But with a 5 hour lag smack dab during a deadline.  I let support know, but this seems really weird.  Hoping to switch to annual to avoid anymore 'chaos' :)

I'm having a billing issue I haven't been able to get resolved through support.  I got a notification on 5/15 that I had an outstanding balance, which is weird because I'm on autopay and it ran fine on 4/15 and I've made sure that I'm up to date after the Verifone\Enscape switch.  Card is still fine, etc.

I went in to find the invoice but I don't have any listed.  And in fact there's no way I can find to pay any outstanding balance that might exist.  I contacted support on May 22nd, and got back a generic response.  I followed up on June 1 after not hearing anything, and got back (word for word) the exact same 'Dear user' response.  Clearly just cut and paste.

Long story short, I don't want my license to expire, yet there seems no way to make sure that Invoice is paid (and how to pay it, if it isn't.)  And the support ticket seems to be in limbo.  So I figured I'd come here in hopes of reaching a live person before my subscription expires on June 14...

Thanks!
Daniel
