General CG Discussion / Re: Complete system crash
« on: 2018-11-26, 14:44:21 »
I have gone back to the msi meg E7B92AMS.127 beta bios and I cant seem to re-create the modifier crashes anymore so I'm hoping it's just an issue with the .129 bios.

You might be right about the single core turbos as the corona system crash happens when I press stop and it deloads from all cores to single for the cleanup stage, super annoying this morning after a 15 hour render...

I will try prime95 out tonight once I have made up some of the lost time on client work. Which bios version are you using on your MEG creation Juraj?

I have just gone back to a previous motherboard bios and it seems to of fixed the noise modifier issue. hopefully it will correct the rendering issue as well. Its strange the bios effected such a specific action.

Hi.

I'm having a really annoying problem at the moment and im not sure if its a hardware or software issue. I just cant think of anything to solve it so I thought I would see if anyone else on here can help guide me in the right direction. posted in AREA but have not got a reply...

So basically my PC completely shuts down when I do certain things in 3DSMAX, the screens go black but the pc fans are still running/ motherboard is still on. No matter what I do I cant get it to start/shut down unless I press the hard restart button on the motherboard.

I originally thought it was a graphics card issue but I ran some benchmarks to test it on full load and its working fine. This is with Max 2019, and I have just installed 2018 and I have had the same issue.

example one, scrubbing the timeline with an animated noise modifier on an object.
example two, manually stopping a corona render frame buffer (only occassionally)

latest servce packs on both installs
new pc build- few weeks old
threadripper 2990wx
msi meg x399 creation (beta bios E7B92AMS.129) im going to try and go back to E7B92AMS.127
64gb flare x ram
msi duke 1080ti
windows 10 pro

New installs in the last weel
Corona 3
Grow FX
Marvolous Designer.

Is there some sort of admin access issue with 3dsmax?

Any help would be really appreciated

Thanks!

The silver arrow comes with 2 additional brackets for fans either side, so you can have 3 fans in total if you want.

I got a 2nd  Thermalright TY 143-140 mm fan, It was a bit of a bodge though as the ram was slightly too high so I had to cut off the bottom of the 2nd fan to get it on. I would try and find some smaller fans if I was to re build it. The flare x is low height ram and I had issues so watch out for those LED rams kits with massive heatsinks as you will have clearance issues with any air cooler you choose.

If you do replace them make sure the fans you put on are equal or better than the spec for the TY 143-140 mm fan. Its 2500rpm 130 CFM so pretty beastly. I went for the silver arrow as its bigger and can handle 320w.

I could only find flare x kits on neweggUS as well, they came super fast though and use Samsung B dies and worked with no issues with the 2933 xmp profile. I'm planning to buy another 64gb at a later date.

I got the Phanteks evolv X case.

I just finished my build a few weeks ago and this is what I got.

2990wx
Thermalright Silver Arrow TR4 CPU cooler- I added a 2nd fan to keep the noise down because at 100% it sounds like an aircraft taking off. Both are running at 50% and are quite.
Msi meg x399 creation (latest beta bios thats floating around msi forums)
Flare x 2933 CL14 (F4-2933C14Q-64GFX) 64gb 4x16
1080TI
1300W SEASONIC Prime ultra 80plus platinum
500GB Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD

I had an issue with the pc not turning on once it was uplugged from the wall but that was just a setting in the bios. Everything worked well together though and it has been working great now for a few weeks!

I would get at least a 1000w psu, My 2990wx is using almost 400w by itself when rendering using PBO.

Hope that helps.

I have just finished my build and thought I would put up results for an aircooler to compare.

I'm using the Thermalright silver arrow TR4 but with a added fan. The fan is seriously loud at 100% so I got the 2nd one and im running them both at 60% full load. The machine is silent during normal work and when rendering it's an ok level.
Ram is flare X 2993 cl14 (cant seem to clock it higher and get it stable)
MSI meg creation

idle temp sits between 38-40 c
loaded rendering 67 c
PPT (cpu) 75% of 500w full load

Corona bench 3.7ghz all cores- 38sec

Cinebench 5884- all cores 3.85mhz
single- 163

Vray bench - 24 sec

I let corona render a scene for 15 hours with no crashes so everything is stable. Overall really happy with the purchase and the speed, my old machine was a 4930k though so anythings an improvement tbf!

I'm a massive fan of Connector, I dont use that many plugins but that is definitely one I couldnt be without now

Like everyone else has said it took some time to get my existing models sorted but after that its super easy to add any new models I create/buy and forces me to keep my asset folders neat.

I orderded the msi 1080ti duke last night and it arrived today, I found it new for £650 which seemed like a good price.

I did check ebay but for the sake of £100 I would rather have a new one with a full warranty, it will be claimed back on my taxes anyway.

Thats a shame the NVLink doesnt work for the 2070.

I was swaying towards the 1080TI but I thought its best to check I had not missed anything worthwhile from the new RTX cards, Nvidias gpu line up is such a mess atm.

I will go ahead and buy a 1080 TI, thanks for your help Juraj!

Hardware / Graphics card for new build
« on: 2018-10-30, 16:09:09 »
HI
I'm about the order the last part for my new workstation and im a bit unsure what graphics card would be best, the budget is roughly £500 to £650.

With that budget I can get either a 2070 or a 'budget' 1080ti, The TI has better performance/higher memory but the 2070 is current gen, has the RTX cores and whatever potential improvements that will bring (are there any?) and is about £100 cheaper.

I'm guessing the Max viewport will be pretty much the same on both cards? I'm using a 4gb 770 at the moment so anything will be an improvement to be fair! Im just using Corona but I would like to start trying out some GPU rendering in the future. I also use photoshop, after effects, fusion...the usual stuff.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Just what I was looking for, Silver arrow with 2 fans looks like the best combination. Thanks!

hmmm interesting, so the Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 is coming off slightly better which is suprising.

Thanks for the heads up with the phanteks case, I think I will still get it as it just looks so good. What ram did you end up going for?

I cant believe its so hard to find parts for this 2990wx build, its like nobody wants my money....which is a bit mental.

Sorry to jump into this post, theres some great info on this thread so I thought it's the best place to get some help with my new 2990wx build. I built my last pc 5 years ago so im a bit out of the loop. any sugestions/improvements would be greatly appreciated!

so far I have spec'd.

CPU-Threadripper 2990WX

MB-MSI MEG X399 CREATION EATX TR4 (although I just read theres some problems?)

Ram - I have spent a week looking through charts and i'm more confused than when i started (samsung B-dies only?) I may also add another 64gb in the future.

Corsair - Vengeance LED (4 x 16GB) DDR4-3000 Memory (CMU64GX4M4C3000C15)
Corsair - Vengeance LPX 64GB (4 x 16GB) DDR4-2666 Memory (CMK64GX4M4A2666C16)
Or if theres any better options that anyone has in there builds? I was looking at the G.Skill Trident Z RGB but its almost twice the price and has rgb...

Cpu Cooler- such a bad selection available but I dont trust my abilities to make a custom loop.
The best option seems to be Thermalright silver arrow TR4, although theres no reviews...and I can only seem to find it on this website
https://www.sotel.de does anyone know if its a legit site?

or theres these options...

Cooler Master Wraith Ripper
Deepcool Fryzen
Noctua - NH-U14S TR4-SP3
Enermax - LIQTECH TR4 II 360 (so many bad reviews for build quality)

GPU- either a 1080ti or 2080, there around the same price so its a tricky one (I would like to play around with fstorm in the near future)

Drive- 970 Evo 500GB M.2-2280

Case- Phanteks ENTHOO EVOLV X GLASS

Psu- SeaSonic PRIME Ultra Titanium 1000W 80+ Titanium (would 1300W be better)

I have a few big projects starting soon so unfortunately I can't hold off on the build anymore. thanks!

hi,

I just wanted to share a new project that I have finished recently.
It's a remake of my first archviz image I did 4 years ago. I thought it would be nice to go back and recreate it to see how I have improved over the years and I also did some interiors for it this time around.

Thanks for having a look.
