Hi Everyone,

I am gonna buy a HP Z640 workstation 2nd hand/refurbished.

Models number. Z640
Chipset: C602
CPU: 2x Intel Xeon E5-2683v3 14 2.0-3.0GHz Core (Core 28, 56 Threads)
Memory: 64 GB PC4-17000 ECC 2133MHz DDR4
Video Card: Nvidia Quadro K4000
Network: LAN Controller 2x Gigabit Adapters
SATA Controller: Samsung 240GB Enterprise SATA 6G + 2TB SATA HDD
Optical Driver: DVD Burner
Power Supply: 925W Power Supply

I am thinking to change the Graphical card with an K2200 (for same price)  or with GTX 980 or 1070.

The price of the workstation is around 2500 + Vat.
What do you think about the configuration and what suggest for graphic card ?

Thanks a lot in advance.
Ciao

Paolo

1070 all the way!
Unless you're using very specific applications, the Quadro will always be slower.
A 980 is ok if you get it for something like 200-250 euro with warranty.

Thanks Jann,

I think i will go for the GTX 1070.
I use 3DMax, Corona and PSD.

I read other similar post, I don't know if i understand right, but i will see the improvement only with games (I don't play ;-) ), VR and GPU rendering(Fstorm for example).

The interactive mode from Corona will be faster ?

Thanks,

Paolo

Viewport performance should be similar for both, that's why I said the 980 is only good if much cheaper. The 8Gb might be better in the long run.
Interactive or anything Corona related will be the same, as it runs on cpu only.

Hi Paolo!

The GPU will make no difference to Corona, either regular rendering or Interactive , both are fully done on the CPU, so whatever graphics card you use won't impair (or improve) Corona performance!

Have you considered on building WS from second hand parts rather than buying a prebuilt used HP Z640?
I've bought an used z620 some time ago and it's a big headache, and a decision I regret.
