The tone mapping stack cannot be created from scratch using maxscript, or controlled using maxscript, unless you perform some manual intervention from the user interface first (e.g. create some new operators, change their values by hand). For example, if you create a fresh new scene and it already has some existing tone mapping stack, you will not be able to adjust its values using maxscript unless you change some of the values manually first. There are some technical reasons for this, and we did not predict that it could cause some issues to our users.

Could you explain in what circumstances my maxscript code won't work? So I know when I can just punch out all of my passes without having doubt? I just tried this on my base max template that has a tone mapping stack in it - and it worked.

This part only applies to Corona 8 non-hotfix version. This was improved in Corona 8 Hotfix 1 so you don't have to worry about it any more.

As to the other questions - I will do my best to get some help for you, but please allow us some extra time as this is an additional task and not the whole team is currently available.

I will say it again please don't do it.

Can we please continue in the support ticket, not here on the forum? Thanks a lot in advance.
I have created the ticket under kr********** so please check your inbox.

This part is causing the issue:

Workstation 2:
Updated to Corona 8. 3ds max 2020 and 2023 crashing when Corona is selected as renderer.
When I open http://localhost:30304/ it says there are no licenses available.

I installed the Chaos License Server manually. But no luck here.

The crash appears if the user is not signed in to the license server, or if no licenses are available.
To make it work, you need to be signed in the license server and you need to have some available licenses there.

If you have licenses under your account, but they are not showing in the license server, as the first step please make sure that you are logging in with the correct email address.

If that doesn't help, please contact us here:

We are working on a hotfix for this right now and it should be released really soon.
As a temporary solution I can recommend downgrading to Corona 8 non-hotfix:

started a support ticket - #44743

If it happens next time and 3ds Max crashes, please capture a minidump and send it to us:
This let us to understand what exactly happened under the hood.

Hi guys, please give me a few minutes, I will set up support tickets for you.

If anyone experiences this, please always contact us here:

We received a few reports like this but so far we are unable to pinpoint any specific issue. It may be related to remote desktop software. I may be wrong, but I don't think it has ever happened without having some remote desktop software installed (not necessarily running, but at least installed).

leave the IR  to make some number of passes to save a final render

Please don't do it. Use interactive rendering for adjusting settings, objects, lights, materials, etc in real time and observing the changes live.
Use final rendering for final rendering.
Otherwise it is using the features contrary to their intended purpose.
Please note that even if we ignore the fact why each feature was developed and how, you will get some quality / render time differences between using IR and final rendering.

Hi, is this causing some problem, like 3ds Max crashing or the scene becoming unusable, or is the error message the only problem?
If you click "ignore" is everything working fine and you can just continue working, or not?

We are aware of this error, however we were never able to reproduce it. In most cases it did not cause any additional troubles.

This is logged as support ticket #44235 and our team will investigate.

Please note that "render freezing unless VFB is moved" is a known issue (thankfully not common) but we have not been able to reproduce it so far, and we do not know what exactly is causing it.

It seems to be somehow related to remote desktop software (e.g. Team Viewer), which does not have to be running, only installed. It may be also related to the system power management, but this is not confirmed, just a guess.

The support team will soon reply to you in your ticket with some questions / troubleshooting ideas.

[Max] I need help! / Re: Getting squares on IR refresh
« on: 2022-06-24, 13:35:12 »
This is a known artifact related to our adaptive environment sampler. Generally, those squares should disappear rather quickly (after a few passes in IR), they should never appear in production rendering, and they should not lead to any problems.
Can you please confirm that this is an issue to you only because you find it visually distracting?

[Max] Feature Requests / Re: Mikk T Support

+1 I noticed Vray 6 was giving me better results with Normal maps than Corona.

Are you sure this is related to Mikk T support?
Could you share some examples of this? (renders, and scenes if possible)
