Ok here is scene with that behaviour.

Environment fixes up if i change environ to any than screen mapping, but goes back if i change back to screen mapping.

Show mat settings. Are you sure you did not apply normal map as bitmap, or opposite bump bitmap as normals?

I just plugged procedural noise into bump slot.

Yeah. Aberration doesn't make your render better. If you take your real camera and try to shot lamp with visible burning wire, background will be dark.
Doesn't bottom contact should be lead metal ?

I think you should increase environment, and lower sunlight intensity. Your shadows too black.

I don't find it insane... they finally have a website, that is all :) It would be insane if it launched with 3ds Max plugin as well... but it's just Maya and Softimage. Everyone knew that already :)
