Hi there,

I was wondering if there are any articles or user experiences for suggesting some of the better mice models available for 3d work and especially for working with 3ds MAX.

For me one of the biggest things is that a smooth middle mouse scroll wheel (when pressed) is essential because that is one of the most used features in MAX for navigating in 3d space. I got a Rival mouse from Steel Series since it felt decent, but after a while this thing has some (hardware)troubles when using the scroll wheel which seems to be a known issue since alot of people describe this issue on the web.

Anyway, I'm hoping that some users here can share some insights in decision making of buying a decent mouse for 3DS MAX work. Thanks in advance.

To me, nothing beats good old Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical. I tried A LOT of other mice and never found one with such a smooth MMB as the one on the Microsoft WMO.

Thanks for the reply and your conlusion that a "default" mouse still works best for you. Personally I'm not a fan of the more advanced mice with ergonomical grips en rotating balls or whatsoever hence my purchase of a rival gaming mouse back then.

Would be interested to see if more people feel like that.

Hi,

Thanks for your input, according to all the given info so far it seems that there is a wide variety of personal preferences in terms of ergonomical and more advanced trackball mice already.  I'll have a closer look into each one.

Never even knew about existence of such type of mouses. How long for you it took to get used to it after normal mouse? Did you try gaming with it?

I bought one of those vertical mice a few months ago and had to return it bc it felt so weird. One of my coworkers has one and she's been using it for years though.

The one I got was https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B9PDB5X/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The one I've been using for like a decade and can't seem to find a good replacement is Logitech Wireless Mouse M325.

Mice I've tried and had to return because of very stiff middle mouse buttons are:

Razer Deathadder 2013
Logitech MX Wireless
Func MS3 R2 Gaming Mouse
SteelSeries World of Warcraft Cataclysm
Anker Vertikale Ergonomic Optical USB Maus
Roccat Tyon
Mad Catz M.M.O. 7
Logitech G502 Proteus
Logitech G600

The one that has the least stiff MMB out of these is the Func MS3 but I couldn't adapt to its shape.

If someone knows a mouse as good as the Microsoft WMO with additional buttons (à la MMO...) I too want to know :)

A stiff MMB is exactly what is the worst you can have when using 3DS MAX. so far my Rival mouse was the best I found but still not very satisfied, especially since I now have some hardware problems with it.
The vertical grip is also something I never looked into but seems promising in terms of wristpain although I don't really have problems with that so far.

I did some searching and am interested in this mouse: https://www.3dconnexion.eu/nc/products/cadmouse-product-line.html It is unfortunately very pricey but if it's allows you a better navigation for 3ds MAX then it could be a go for me. If anyone has experiences with this one please let me know.

The only reason I'm using the Logitech G600 both at home and work, are the 3 main buttons. Remapped the mid click to the right button, and it's a dream for work!
Not really using of the side buttons, but they are nice if you prefer extra shortcuts.
Logitech do have quality issues, so be aware of that.
G502 was good too, just didn't feel well for my hand.

I've also had vertical mice from Delux (cheaper brand than Evoluent), and was using one for a long time, even with some light gaming. They do need to fit your hand well to feel good.
Also tried MS Ergonomic round shaped mouse, but the Windows side button wasn't remappable, which made it useless.
Only thing I haven't tried are trackball mice. Maybe someday :D

Took me 3-5 days to get used to it and yes you can play games without problems. biggest problem in the beginning was hitting the mouse buttons i wanted to hit :)

I use a Wacom tablet (intuos 3- had it for a long timel) most of the time. I am not sure whether that's better than a mouse in terms of wrist and arm movement. but with it, u tend to work faster.

Evoluent vertical mouse is brilliant, takes a few days to get used to but is so much easier on the wrist.

It also has a dedicated middle mouse button in addition to the scroll wheel, which is miles better for panning the viewport.

Not cheap.

Interesting to see that alot of users use a vertical mouse, never thought about that. Also the ability to have a dedicated middle mouse button makes it even more interesting! I will dive into those for sure now. Thanks for all the replies, very helpful.

A vertical mouse is a godsend for avoiding carpal tunnel or for working if you've already got it. Puts your wrist into a neutral position. I personally use Evoluent. Something to keep in mind with a vertical that you don't quite need to consider with a regular is sizing. Take the time to measure yourself for the right one according to the manufacturer.

Hi fellazb,
I think you use Horizontal Mouse, It creates problem if you use it for a long time. Dont use Horizontal Mouse. Use Vertical Mouse, It will help you a lot.  I had purchased Vertical Mouse for my 3ds MAX. I am not feeling pain in my right shoulder. My fingers are relax and there is no pain even in my wrist.

In start, using Vertical Mouse, You will feel different as you are shifting from Horizontal to Vertical Mouse but in next 5 to 10 minutes you will be familiar with it. You can also watch videos that how to use vertical mouse

Using the classic gaming mouse at home, but at work I have been infected with our office's vertical mouse fanfare.
It is definitely something I recommend for long monotonous sessions, certainly more comfy.
Doesn't matter which manufacturer or model, the vertical nature alone makes quite the difference.

edit:
In start, using Vertical Mouse
haha, just read this after posting.
Apparently this is some universal consensus among 3D package users...

For those who would like more mainstream quality, Logitech already makes vertical version of their MX flagship model. It's less alien.

In all reviews it is praised as probably the best vertical mouse and it looks very good, but the price... in my country it is close to €150. I can't justify such money for a product that will last two years at best. On the other hand, i've read that for those who have wrist pain, vertical mouse doesn't really help - it just relocates pain to another area. Luckily i don't have problems with pain... yet.

Yes Logitech is super expensive. And it has uncanny "feature" of stopping functioning eventually, I used to replace Performance MX every six months once...

I've been testing for past year and half instead this: https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-us/products/mice/sculpt-ergonomic-mouse/l6v-00001

It's something of in-between, not quite vertical, though highly angled and it forces your wrist to be elevated, which I consider the more important part of equation, this should avoid the pain relocating to further up.
I used to have terrible pain, couldn't work every third day. That is all gone, though this mouse requires bit of an effort to use eschewing some comfort.

Well, i saw a €12 vertical mouse in my local shop, but the question is - is it any good? Choosing good mouse is a lot more than choosing between traditional or vertical. It can have best ergonomical shape in the world, but it still would be useless if everything else is crap. Could you share your experience about that Anker mouse?

I posted about this on my FB a while ago but in case anyone uses Zowie mice, or any other high-polling-rate mice, if the polling rate is too high then it can make max's viewport navigation really choppy and sluggish. dropping the mouse's polling rate a bit fixes the issue. Just a heads-up.

I use a vertical mouse and wouldnt go back. Got used to it in about 2 or 3 days and its not weird to swap back and forth. I also use a space mouse for navigation in the perspective viewport.

Yes, Rogue style - two handed weapon wielding :) Very nice to navigate in IR as well (even fullscreen, since max still has the focus) + some additional buttons to define.

This is the perfect thread I have been looking for.

I have that Microsoft mouse and keyboard. To be honest, the keyboard is great and feels very premium. Of course it takes time to get used to, the keyboard far more than the mouse.
One cool feature of the keyboard is the numerical keys that are separate. I have them on the left side. So I type in numbers with the left hand and use the mouse with my right.
This is very convenient, of course you have to teach yourself typing numbers with the left hand. I'm a right hand guy, so it took a while. And you have to change your system from coma to point if your using european annotations. This is so you can use the point from the numerical keyboard.

As for the mouse, it is failing. The left click is only working when hitting the upper end of the button. So I'm looking for a new one. And the keyboard has some F1-F12 keys that get stuck form time to time. For me, the mouse is alright but it's far to small for my hand. My hand is taller than a 6 inch smartphone, so you have a reference.

I want to get a real vertical mouse but most of those you can't program buttons and that is a NO NO.
I gess using a space mouse would be an option but I don't really want to spend money on that. Apart from yet another thing on my desktop, there's simply no space.

So this Logitech MX with programmable buttons looks great. I just need 1 or 2 buttons for pan and zoom.

If anyone buys it (me for christmas ;) share your experience.

BTW I never had any issues with pain even before the Microsoft Ergonomic mouse, it is simply to prevent getting hurt in the first place.

Pretty much yeah its great for maneuvering interiors for camera setup and exploring different angles. Im yet to find a better button mapping for the spacemouse than the Esc key to stop badly timed autosaves haha.

Huh what, the Navigator can continue moving within viewport in IR ? That sounds perfect :- ).

I need to give it a second try, I never got the drivers to play well with 3dsMax (always introduced micro-stutter/freeze after every move), maybe that is solved...

You still navigate perspective viewport or camera but when bringing the VFB on top/in front, you can continue navigating because the VFB does not eat the 3D-mouse events.

The only issue I always have since the new driver architecture (if we are talking about 3dconnexion) - besides very annoying slow driver developement for new max versions -  is that I do not manage to adjust the dead center correctly. So a camera lock script is crucial.

Good Luck

If the space mouse works for you well in Max - great, I really think it's a cool gadget. Because of my tendonitis problems I ordered  a space mouse and tested it in Maya( just before starting in a new studio). Drivers are a nightmare. Yould could alter a locked and keyed camera- which is actually impossible in Maya- when accidently using the spacemouse in the camera viewport. The studio would have kicked me out the next day if I had brought this malicious thing into their production. Sadly they don't give a f*. This error is reported in their forums for years and they didn't answer me, when I contacted them.

Since the space mouse wasn't working for me, I'm using a contour shuttle pro(https://www.contourdesign.com/product/shuttlepro-v2/) / razor tartarus( https://support.razer.com/gaming-keyboards/razer-tartarus-chroma) - depends on the task. My problem was pain during clicking, so mapping mouse clicks to these devices helped me alot.

Can it be programmed to replace those keys?

When I read a topic a contour shuttle pro mouse I was coincidentally lead to this mouse which seems very interesting in term of flexible angle adjustment

Is anyone familiar with this mouse? To me it looks very promising.

Yes, you can map anything on those keys from hotkeys to mouseclicks to macros.
What the tartarus is good at:
- you can map basically anything you want. And afaik you can define modifiers to buttons so you can map a button to three different settings
- the design is really great. My hand lays very comfortable at it. I chose the lower side button to be the ALT-key. ALT ist the'orbit'-button in most 3d-apps and - jeez- the alt-key of the keyboard I used for my diploma movie ages ago, was really sanded down by heavy usage. With this layout I only have to lower my thumb.
What tartarus is not good at it:
- try it at a local store. I think the keys are ok, but could be better.
- It's gaming hardware. The Software comes with a shitload of useless 'cool' stuff...
- ...which actually eats performance. When I toggle from one Software to another it takes ages(seconds) for the tartarus to change the profile. I believe it's because I have differnet colors mapped to the softwares and it waits until the illumination changed to the different color. This is really annoying.
- it could be heavier or should come with proper anti-sliding-stuff
- you can't color map keys- only per App. I would pay a shitload for a similiar device which is able to color map each key individually on a per software basis

I solved the middle mouse button issue by getting a gamer mouse and re-assigning one of the thumb buttons to be MMB. I'll never go back to clicking on the scroll wheel.

I use a G602 at the moment, been using it all day, every day since 2013. I bought a couple extra ones (lightly used, $30 each) for when (Or at this point, if) it ever breaks. Upgraded it with my own rechargeable batteries (it uses regular AA) which I have to swap once every half year or so. Highly recommend.

I use the Logitech M500. I really hated it at first and it was my backup in case the "Microsoft wheel mouse optical 1.1a" dies.
It was a very stressful time and I couldn't afford even 1 hour to get to the store and buy a proper tool.. so I got used to it.

I use this M500 for the past 5 or 6 years and it just won't die.
Even got a brand new M305 (which is very accurate for a wireless rat. it really blown my mind when I tried it at the store) and I don't have the power of will to make the switch.

+1 Anker Vertical mouse (wired) user. After one morning using it and I'm converted! Very light and fast, the only downside is not having support for the small finger (pinky?) and it tends to rub on the mouse pad.

I miss having some sort of support under my thumb on that mouse too

Recently I switched to Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic. It looks alien and feels super uncomfortable at first, but after I got used to it I think it's much more convenient than classic keyboard+mouse combo I used before. The mouse is almost sphere-shaped and has a thumb rest with two thumb buttons which can be customized (I didn't yet figure out what to assign there). I can feel that completely different muscles are working when I am using this mouse.
It is a bit pricey (about 100€), but if you are lucky you can get it cheaper (sales, used ones, etc).

Heh yeah this is fun mouse, I used it for past two years myself :- ). Month ago I switched to Logitech Vertical though after even the Sculpt wasn't enough to aleviate all wrist pains. Sculpt was much better that regular mouse which made the pain almost debilitating, but Vertical is whole another league.

The Sculpt (the bulbous, there are two models in fact) is perfect middle ground.

My report after testing several mice. :p
About a month ago I bought:

    • Evoluent VM4SW VerticalMouse 4 Right Hand Ergonomic Mouse with Wireless Connection

Returned: It's TOO vertical. It slips when lifting it to move it. Annoying. Also it gave me pain in the lower part of the hand.
Also it's too massive and I kept hitting the keyboard.

    • 3Dconnexion Spacemouse Compact 3D Mouse

Kept. It's nice to have when navigating through some scenes.

    • Logitech MX Ergo Wireless Trackball Mouse – Adjustable Ergonomic Design, control and Move Text/Images/Files Between 2 Windows and Apple Mac Computers (Bluetooth or USB), Rechargeable, Graphite

    Returned
Definitely an option. It's nice that I don't need to move around the hand. I'd consider it if I got wrist pain. Not at the moment.

    • VicTsing MM057 2.4G Wireless Portable Mobile Mouse Optical Mice with USB Receiver, 5 Adjustable DPI Levels, 6 Buttons for Notebook, PC, Laptop, Computer - Black
    • VicTsing Wireless Mouse, 2nd Computer Mouse with 5 Adjustable DPI Levels, Ergonomic Optical USB Mouse with Nano USB Receiver, 6 Buttons for Laptop, Notebook, PC, Black

    Returned.
Both VicTsing were pretty goor for such cheap mice. But I like the wheel in my m325 better.

BTW I found a way to fix logitech's wireless problems: a USB extender.

I've yet to find a mouse with a similar middle mouse button as the Microsoft Wheel mouse optical. Can anyone chip in about what mice have a soft middle mouse button? Almost all new mice have incredibly hard to press middle mouse buttons...

How are you finding the MX vertical?
Ive been put off by too many people saying MX mice die after 6-8 months

Yeah well, I do sorta expect it to die after a year, I am not making illusions. One year would be nice actually as with my sweaty hands, any semi rubberized plastic ends up looking less than pleasing...

I can't compare the vertical aspect to any other of such kind, never tried other ones I just trusted Logitech to get this one right.
I am overall very please, only contentious point could be (might be plus for others) is that the mouse is very, very light-weight. It lacks any kind of heft, almost feels like toy.

In my case they weren't dying but they start to have lag. I solved the problem by adding a USB extension. Apparently there was interference.

I think vertical mice are intentionally light due to the difference in how you move it with your wrist rather than your whole arm.
I'm tempted to get one but the cost of them is pretty steep for something you only expect to last a year. But then again I do use it for most of my day.

It's steep but my carpal tunnel was becoming severe which kinda surprised me as I am barely 30 years old :- ). If I want to keep using PC this is little investment to save my health.

Does new logitechs became so bad? I hardly can believe it. I'm using logitech marathon mouse, which is 7+ years old now and it still serves me pretty well. Yes, i had to resolder click microswitchers (originals lasted about two years, replacements even less), and rubberized plastic is worn to the extreme, but appart from that, this rodent endures my abuse remarkably well.

I've found that carpal tunnel seems to be more related to the height of your work surface than the actual grip. Never tried a vertical mouse, but some others, and in the end I came to the conclusion that I held my mouse to high up so now I have a little ledge in front of the screen that holds both the keyboard and the mouse, which made a dramatic difference.

Yes, i had to resolder click microswitchers

And that is very much the crux of it :- ) Switchers were the bane of MX range for years but I believe it's better for the latest models (still, they went very fast from MX Performance to Master and Master 2S).
I don't think majority of users have patience with fixing the inner hardware.
Still, this stuff is covered by warranty for most part so I wouldn't consider it a deathknell. Logitech is still the absolute creme de la creme.

Would you care to post a picture of that ? I am having hard time imagining it and I am curious.
But in my case, my wrists already rest comfortably on both keyboard and mouse (and I always used bulky mouses), so there isn't much I can do about my wrist position outside of rotating it. And than made brutal difference.

Im 27 and im yet to experience carpal tunnel thankfully but its a concern because my current workspace is very very unergonomic.

Thanks everybody for contributing your mouse experiences and I was surprised by all the different user preferences everybody has. I dug deeper into several types and in the end I decided to go for the Logitech MX Master 2S.

Price wise (I got it for 79 euros) it isn't the cheapest one out there but this device feels very robust and for me it has a perfect grip, smooth buttons and a fantastic customizable scroll wheel so I don't regret getting it. I've been using it for a week now, but after a day or two I even forgot I had a new mouse and I only felt bad that I waited too long for a replacement of my old wobbly Rival gaming mouse.

There are several options (logitech software) to tweak your mouse to your own preferences, but the default already work well enough for me

So if you need a new one I can recommend this one to give it a try.

I was about to quote Juraj's reply and say something similar.
In my case I had some problems many years ago and then the problems stopped when I noticed that pain in wrists have more to do with the height of the table or desk. And maybe the height of the monitor also has something to do with a pain free position for long hours of work.
Unfortunately I can't say a magic number like: make sure the table is always at 1.25879465 meters from the ground, but it's worth trying and switching things up in case of pain, and do some trial and error.

I'm using Logitech. Not because of any cool features, but because it doesn't stop working when I drop it from the desk. I lost quite a lot of cool mouses just by dropping them once.

Hi all.
Just wanted to let you know that 3D Connexion is selling a keyboard that comes with a mouse for free.
https://3dconnexion.com/us/

I bought the pack and am very happy with it so far. Both the keyboard and the mouse feel very nice.
