So, in 3dsmax 2019 (obviously) when you're using OSL shaders, you have several spaces available such as 'raster', 'world', 'object' and 'screen'.

I was trying to write a shader which maps an image from edge to edge in screen space and couldn't seem to do it, until I tried a different renderer and realized my shader was good all along, and it was Corona mishandling it.

To reproduce: Plug a named space node into a bitmap lookup, and set the space to 'screen'. Plug the bitmap into any kind of material and render with Corona VS any other renderer. I tested Arnold, Scanline and Vray, which all render it correctly.

I'm gonna aggregate all my renders here from now on, like I've seen some other users do. No sense in making a new thread every once in a while.

So here's a start, residential building interiors, there are more currently being done, will post when finished.

2 shots I'm allowed to publish from a last year's project... There's lots more but can't post them unfortunately.

Double-bed room in Sheraton Hotel, Dubrovnik. Since it was published in the papers recently I finally get to upload it here too. :)

We originally made much nicer, more wrinkled bed sheets and some other stuff. But unfortunately that got dumped.

Here's some of the newer stuff I did with Corona. Average render times were a bit less than 1 hour at 3000px wide on 4 dual xeon machines. Could probably be faster but I just left it at 300 passes and went home. :)

The cat is an internal joke with the client. Disregard plz. :D

I encountered something weird. I wanted to plug in a CoronaAO map in the refraction color slot of a glass material so that I get some non-transparent edges. What happened was pretty weird so I made a little test scene to see if it's somehow related to the scene I was working on - and it is not.

To reproduce just make some boxes or whatever, and make a CoronaMtl with the default settings, only reflection and refraction set to 1, ie. standard transparent glass. Render.
Now put a CoronaAO map in the reflection slot of that material, and render again.

This is my test scene, just a plane, CoronaSun and a few boxes with the glass material.

Here are screenshots from my test:

This is without the CoronaAO map. The 1st pass took approx. 27 seconds, and notice 7 mil rays/s. Now WITH CoronaAO in the refraction slot:

1:21, so three times slower, and check out the stats: 23.2 mil rays/s...

I would expect slowdowns but not by 300% for such a simple scene. Also, what's with the rays/s stats?

In a more complex scene this also impacts UHD cache speeds, where I encountered a 500% percent slower solution (maybe even more) just by adding one box with a material like this.

[EDIT] Forgot to add: I'm using Corona 1.01.00 (Jun 16 2015) with 3dsmax 2016.

[Max] Resolved Bugs / BUG: Random slowdown on scene parsing
« on: 2015-01-21, 10:06:31 »
So with the 19.1. daily I'm experiencing weird and completely random slowdowns when rendering a complex scene. Sometimes the render starts instantly, other times "Parsing the scene..." takes a minute or more, and sometimes "Building acc. structure..." takes a minute or two.

All of this happens without changes in the scene, ie. I press render and cancel a few times in a row, and each time the scene preparation behaves differently.

I'm using Max 2015.

This is one from a series of renders for a hotel renovation project in Berlin.

The whole thing was a rush job (as always) so I had exactly one day to do this one. What saved me is that I didn't have to fake anything. The only light in the scene is a HDRI coming from the two half-covered windows. It feels amazing to have the freedom do do things like that, without having to worry how to fake stuff. :)

If some of the colors seem weird (like the pinkish ceiling) that was all specified by the clients, and yes, the empty picture frame is meant to be empty for some reason, and the dark one is a mirror unfortunately reflecting the curtains so it looks weird. But for a one day job, it's fine I suppose.

A simple walk-in wardrobe. Commercial work. Could have done some things differently, like more variety with the clothes' colors, but the client was in a rush and
said this was good enough.

Hi Guys,

This is my first post here, and I'm completely new to Corona. I'm a long time 3dsmax user (I use mentalray).

I got a rush job a few days ago to do a series of renders for a small kitchen, and I took the plunge and tried Corona instead of my usual workflow. And I must say I'm really impressed with the results and ease of use. Simply amazing.

The clients wanted their current Gaggenau appliances in the new kitchen so I had to model them, and the main feature is that mostly everything is made of Corian, so it appears as a single block, no seams anywhere. And also no handles due to a push-to-open system. All in all they had specific appliances, chairs, table, lamp, and tiles which had to be custom modeled and textured. The rest is run-of-the-mill stuff. All work was done in only two days, and in that time, I'm very satisfied with the results, mostly thanks to Corona. I'm officialy a fan.

Renders were PT+HD, around 2 hrs on one  i7 + one AMD X8 @ 2500x1400px.

Comments and suggestions always welcome. :)
