nice infos.
perhaps i can do the same if i take noctua u14s and add an additional NF-A15 PWM fan :)
I think i will do the same as you do with RAM and buy 64 more at a later date to limit brokitude.

again thanks for your help.

There is link to single benchmark in the big thread, but I have to say that is some low quality benchmarking... doesn't really tell anything.
Looks like it doesn't provide much improvement compared to the Noctua, but I have some doubts as the heatsinks are bigger and it has more heatpipes.

I would personally give preference to the Silver Arrow as well. You can mount additional fan easily using brackets or some home-made magic :- ). The default is so loud because it's 3000RPM fan, while Noctua uses 1500RPM. You can even replace the fans with the same combo that NH-D15 is using, by adding one Noctua Sterrox 120mm fan.
I forgot to ask.
If i take the same RAM kit as James for example (or any 64Gb kit), will it be ok to buy the same kit later to upgrade to 128 or will i have to replace all ?
thanks

thanks.

Nice build from James :- ). Wouldn't change anything about it at all !

Double co-sign under the 1000W+ PSUs. It's both good to have PSU running at lower capacity and to have leeway. Additional bonus is the PSU will be more silent as it can run in semi-passive mode.
Hi Juraj,
Do you think Silver Arrow is superior to NOCTUANH U14S TR4‑SP3 ?
Thanks

I just finished my build a few weeks ago and this is what I got.

2990wx
Thermalright Silver Arrow TR4 CPU cooler- I added a 2nd fan to keep the noise down because at 100% it sounds like an aircraft taking off. Both are running at 50% and are quite.
Msi meg x399 creation (latest beta bios thats floating around msi forums)
Flare x 2933 CL14 (F4-2933C14Q-64GFX) 64gb 4x16
1080TI
1300W SEASONIC Prime ultra 80plus platinum
500GB Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD

I had an issue with the pc not turning on once it was uplugged from the wall but that was just a setting in the bios. Everything worked well together though and it has been working great now for a few weeks!

I would get at least a 1000w psu, My 2990wx is using almost 400w by itself when rendering using PBO.

Hope that helps.

thanks a lot !
I haven't had time to look all in detail yet, but good tip on the PSU.  About the Silver Arrow and the second fan, I m a bit confused as to where you added your second fan.
Cool to see a stable build.
What case did you take ?

Hardware / Looking for advice on 2990wx workstation build
« on: 2018-11-14, 22:38:05 »
Last time I posted that i was trying to build a 4k workstation with 2990wx and 128Gb for corona renders mostly.

Obviously I am for the moment beyond 4k and id like to minimize the price and optimize if possible.  But the main subject is not doing a big beginner mistake in picking parts, since I havent built a workstation for a veryyyyy long time.
If you could just have an look at my temporary build and thell me what you think that would be nice.

here is the link to the build :

Thank you

Makes me think because Xmp for 2933 appears to be working stable also there are no indications apart from absence in gigabytes listings that ram shouldn't do.
Off course before buying i checked qvl's there and there, and wasn't concerned this memory would create any performance drops(and doubting it is to be blamed) as it is advertised as high performance memory for x399 platforms.
Also reading from this thread psanitra has same memory in his build without any complains.

Yes perhaps memory is not to be blamed. Just noticed this little strangeness. I am currently trying to build a 2990wx system and stumbled on the same incoherence where the gskill qvl listed my board but the board qvl was not listing the ram.
I think now I'll try to respect the board qvl  instead of the memory one. We never know.

good luck finding whats slowing you down. keep the thread updated :) if you can

prolly not related but the memory you listed (f4-2933c14q2-128gtzrx) doesnt appear on the motherboard QVL http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_x399-aorus-xtreme_2nd.pdf

actually g.skill website says aorus xtreme motherboard is on QVL https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-2933c14q2-128gtzrx
Maybe list from gigabyte isn't up to date.
yah this is strange.
i found another qvl for this card where the memory f4-2933c14q2-128gtzrx appears.
http://download.gigabyte.cn/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_x399-aorus-xtreme.pdf

i don't know which pdf is the most recent tho. the one where your ram doesnt appear has the mention "2nd" at the end of its name.

edit: from this page http://download.gigabyte.cn/FileList/Memory/  it seems the one which doesnt contain your ram is the most recent
edit 2 : http://download.gigabyte.cn/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_x399-aorus-xtreme_2990WX.pdf   this seems to be the good pdf to look at (doesnt contain f4-2933c14q2-128gtzrx)

Recently bought 2990wx system:

f4-2933c14q2-128gtzrx(optimized for AMD)
aorus xtreme x399
seasonic 1300w
samsung 970 pro 512gb
NZXT kraken 72x(67 degrees on full load stock frequency) 5050 Cinebench and about 40seconds corona benchmark(basically everything as expected)

But....

Everything in the start seemed vanilla good until I started experiencing lags and constant freezing on heavy scenes 40gb or more when loaded into Ram. Gets very annoying after some time. And "smoothness" is even worse than on my previous systems like 5960x and Ryzen 1800X. I am fully aware that Max utilises only single core during tasks like ui, saving, opening file etc. but isn't main problem NUMA architecture itself that isn't yet fully optimized on windows 10?

perhaps not related but the memory you listed (f4-2933c14q2-128gtzrx) doesnt appear on the motherboard QVL http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_x399-aorus-xtreme_2nd.pdf

In other news, for MEG owners, there is another private beta bios, comes with updated AGESA and some users reports stable memory clocks up to 3166 Mhz (with 8x8 sticks though, haven't seen any 4x16/8x16 confirm) so memory compatibility and stableness is improved. I did not try it myself yet.

Are other 2990wx MBs stable which >2933Mhz memory ?

26
ok thanks.

RAM qvl is ok whith motherboards, but motherboards qvl do not list rams.

On the GSKILL page  https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-2933c14q2-128gtzrx   , the QVL says its ok whith ASUS ROG ZENITH EXTREME, and MSI MEG X399 CREATION, but on the pages of the motherboards (https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socketTR4/ROG_ZENITH_EXTREME/ROG_Zenith_Extreme_memory_QVL2133-....pdf?_ga=2.91445914.1451843716.1541767273-46892080.1541767273  and  https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/MEG-X399-CREATION#support-mem-17), the F4-2933C14Q2-128GTZRX does not appear.

any idea why ?

27
Ok,
so i used this tool : https://benzhaomin.github.io/bdiefinder/     to find a 128GB b die kit with correct latency.  The "best one" i found was this one : https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-2933c14q2-128gtzrx
Now in the last link in qvl section, it is written that its ok with x399 (2990) cards, like for example    Asus ROG ZENITH EXTREME.

The problem :
in pc parts picker, when i pick this motherboard (   Asus ROG ZENITH EXTREME), i cant choose this memory (its not in the list).
did i make a mistake ?

any hint ?

thanks

28
thanks, depending on the price at the end i could eventually switch for a 2970 we'll see. Also the budget is not "fixed" if its worth.

I am currently trying to choose a mother board. I heard asus was good so i picked Asus ROG ZENITH EXTREME to see if i can build something with it, but it seems when i look at the QVL for this motherboard, there is no 2933 RAM.   the higher the better, right ?

edit:  started to read about ram choice and got lost in all this b-die stuff. this looks complicated to the novice eye.
whats the optimal memory clock for threadripper, or the minimum one ?
i read everywhere dimm choice is really important whith them. Is there a tiny list with motherboard/macthing b-die ram  somewhere ?

Anyway,
Sill a long way to go, i have all week end to do this haha

thanks

thanks a lot for your answer.

I am going to browse PCPartPicker right now

Hi,

Hi, I haven't built a workstation for quite a few years now (8-9 i think) and things seem to have changed quite a lot.
I recently moved from vray to corona, and I need to build a workstation (for working with 3ds max and rendering with corona mainly),  with ~4k€ budget .
The only imperative is 128 GB RAM, (and of course a correct graphic card for working on 3ds max mainly).
I am looking for advices on parts to go in this build.

I started to look at xeons builds, but they seem really expensive. so i started to llok at I9 and amd.
Apparently threadrippers are the cpus to go for if i read the forum. So i guess a 2950/2970/2990 is what i have to go for (?)

I'm a bit lost when I browse the forum and stumble on so many things I dont know like "QVL b die samsung" "2933" "noctua" "dual\quad channel" . And I'm also totally lost about power supply, case, HDD (SSD, rpm,...).
5-6To hdd sounds enough(500Go SSD and rest normal ?, or are there certain other things to respect in that regard ?)
About the motherboard,I read a lot of asus prime, and others seem to prefer msi meg... I strictly have no idea why, so I dont think I m able to make an informed choice.
My main fear is to opt for parts not meant or ideal for working together in the same build.

Any advice would be welcome. If you know a company who could advise me on precise components, even if i have to pay a fee, I m also happy.

thank you.
