Hello!

I don't get the displacement function.
It seems that 50 % grey does not generate 0 mm displacement?
How does it work?

50% grey or RGB 128, 128, 128 does not displace geometry, yes. Just make sure that you have loaded your bitmap as linear (gamma 1.0), otherwise middle grey will be shifted.

actually 50% displaces geometry with default settings - it depends on what the minimum and maximum values are se to. If minimum (black) value is set to 0 mm (default), then black is not displaced

Great, it was loaded with 2,2 and for example -100 black, 100 white. Still see a little shift but now it works!
Thank you very much! Sure did give me some headache

Do you have any advice in what file format to use for best performance?
I use jpg 16 bit grayscale, 8000 x8000 pixels for 70m x70m square.

Should I subdived the plane or it doesn't matter?

Subdividing the plane does not matter, as Corona's displacement is adaptive and it is calculated based on the max size controlled in the Render Setup > Performance tab.
It is best to use 32-bit files for displacement - they won't give you the visible banding or stepping on the displaced geometry, if the displacement is very tall.
Obviously, the higher resolution, the more detail you will get.
Also keep in mind that displacement should usually be used for bigger details, and bump maps should be used for smaller ones.
