With Corona, there's really no need to use AO. It already applies a small bit of it to renders. But you could do it with a multi-pass. Let me know if you need help!

I now see why it is named "Dirt" in vray and not AO - the name does not evoke that it should be used to "enhance" light transport, but only for material effects

No problem man! Here's a really simple scene I've attached. In the Corona multi-pass settings you add a Texmap, then make sure to enable it. Then in the map slot, choose a Corona AO map. Then when you render, you can change the Beauty pass to Texmap. Then you'll just have to composite it in photoshop using a multiply blending mode.

Another option would be to apply the AO map into the diffuse channel of the material you want AO applied to. Someone correct me if I'm wrong to apply it to the diffuse channel?

Anyway, hope this helps!

I think it is crucial for C4D users to apply Corona's version of vRay Dirt, whether it is via AO or different way. I think that post-production in Photoshop is not a real solution. For example I would like to see the effects in the Picture Viewer already. Corona Team - are you working on a real solution?

Did you try this?:

Here, I did your homework for you and tried the AO shader in a layer shader together with the previous shader in a diffuse slot ;-)

I've used the AO multiple times in different channels, mostly to mask out things or multiplied in a c4d layer shader and works pretty good especially with the include/exclude options.
It's basically the same as in other renderers.
Though, it can become quite demanding, depending on the set-up. Nowadays, I prefer layering the materials with the CRN layer shader and use AO as the mask.
Here's just a simple old metal I used in my scenes.

I also use it from time to time in different channels to "mask-out" other textures etc for a worn look.
