Hardware / fault-prone Threadripper System
« on: 2018-07-16, 09:32:18 »
Hi good morning,

I have a question which engages me quite a few weeks. I have bought a Threadripper 1950x System last year an it works ok, not that stunning as I was hoping and how it could have boosted renderings.
I am not sure, but it ist not 100% the render time which gets on my nerves, but more the 3ds Max lethargy. I have an ASrock Taichi Mainboard and 64GB G.Skill Flare X 2400 (too slow?) RAM and SSD (crucial 750GB mx200) + Hitachi 4TB.  The PSU is a 700W Cougar VTX. + Nvidia 1060 6gb card. +NH U14S TR4-SP3.

Not that seldom (1-3/month) I get BSOD which definitely sucks. (I tried 24h Prime and checked Ram etc.)

I use it for hobby rendering with the pleasure of a nice picture or visualizing an Idea for myself.

What do you guys think might help or would you recommend to do as another step or if I should send the whole system back to the reseller, who built it. (Mindfactory)

Another question is, would you think a 32 core TR could speed up 3ds Max as well. I have read, the usage of all cores (XFR?) might be better or do you think the PSU would be overstrained?

Thanks for all Ideas, but right now it doesn´t make that much fun to use this (loud and buggy) system.

Best regards

Hardware / Threadripper Vs. Epyc and their market appearance
« on: 2017-07-23, 09:51:19 »
Hi,

more and more there come new informations or keep repeating about AMD Threadripper and Epyc aka Naples.
The prices appear in the anticipated range, but what I was wondering (or not, really) how expensice the Threadripper Mainboard might be.
( wccftech:"We are hearing prices close to ASUS PRIME X299 Deluxe which costs $499 US.") Which sound logical, because they can address more the fancy gaming enthusiast and maybe less the "prosumers".(With ugly LED show and fire spitting dragons etc.)  If this price dimension would be a general benchmark there is a much lower benefit by using a well priced Threadripper.
This was the reason why I started comparing the prices e.g. Epyc 7401p with 24 cores >1000€ +Gigabyte MZ31-AR0 (?€) with the Ripper and it really interests me what you guys think?!
Wasn´t Epyc already launched, haven´t seen any resellers neither CPUs nor Mainboards. Was it just a paperlaunch or are they all sold to Facebook?

What are your appreciations about both products and appearance in the market. I think TR will come out around August 10th, but Epyc?
Thanks in advance

Hardware / Don´t beat me, but...
« on: 2017-01-10, 08:19:06 »
These days I am struggling with the question, do I build a WS with 2x 2683v3 or 2x2680 v1 because it is quite cheaper and the cpu doesn´t need to be imported from China.
I had for two days a HP 620z but (as already mentioned in this Hardware section) with ist proprietary bridges, adapters and a mainboard which suddenly dies and 2 dimms of broken Ram, I sent it back.
But my question is, because I am always out of ram - my 4770k with 32gb is to weak- , is the 2683 worth the higher price and what do you think of the upcoming Ryzen/ Naples (Multi CPU) Systems.
Everything sounds so great, but nearly 15 years ago, I had 2 AMD K6 or K7 Athlon, I don´t remember anymore and both died in a short period of time and AMD refused the warranty, so I am little warry about them. They had been the reason, why I solely used Macs with bootcamp until two years.

What do you think about the latest progress of AMD Server/WS/Desktop CPUs? Are they worth waiting? Thanks in advance.

Work in Progress/Tests / displacement is quite good
« on: 2016-05-12, 11:09:32 »
Hi guys,

I was playing around with some Forest Pack and displacement solutions, getting a typical alpine rock wall. I started with scattered rocks, but that was somehow too antiseptic. Yesterday I had seen the 30 days trial offer from Poliigon with real great 6K, 8K, whatever K HQ textures. Many of them are very good in their details. The displacement textures are not so good, I had to do that from scratch, but maybe sombody finds handy stuff, he was searching for. I didn´t know the website before...

btw. I think iToo made a little better job with FP5.0.5 in combination with Corona, the flowers are a littlebit dull, but the grass is out of the box:-)

Gallery / Paris Paris!

Hi folks,

I just wanted to post a little living room I just modeled. The table and chairs once were welded in our university / our metalworkers studio, because I didn´t have the money / didn´t find furniture, corresponding to those, I had in my mind.
Now they are in my flat and quite heavy and I always wanted to try rendering them.
Just 60 passes but it took around 13 hours with a 4770k.
I hope you like them. There is no postprocessing so you are all totally welcome for tips how I can tune the look and feel of the picture :-)

Kind regards.
