[Max] Daily Builds / Re: New VFB Skin and functionality
« on: 2024-02-15, 17:35:11 »
- Cryptomatte masks (if this could work also for selective denoising, even better)
- Allow creation of folders in the main layer stack in VFB
- Add the ability to select and move multiple layers into a folder in VFB
- Post chromatic aberration in the VFB
- Highlight/Shadow clipping warning

I like all these.

I just want to say that you guys did a really good job with the Corona Lister and I'm hoping to see more of that UI design in the new VFB.

Thank you everyone.

Too high an albedo value can affect render times too, so there is a bit more to it than the artistic look. You can use the albedo render pass to detect any problems (it will show you areas where the albedo is too high AFTER the texture has been multiplied by the Level). Hope this helps :)

Hi Tom,
Thank you.
I don't think you understood the topic though.
I can rephrase it if needed.

34
when creating Albedo textures from scratch as per the pbr guide (which is well worth a read),

I really think I need to take a look at this PBR thingy in more detail.
This was a great suggestion because it seems it'll help me understand how to manage the brightness (and color profiles maybe) of my textures to fit in the new standards.

There's probably more I could rant on about but these things alone would create a huge problem, not to mention some people have requested they can increase the level beyond 1.0 in Corona, so there is other use cases as well where people want the complete opposite.

That was me too! LOL.
I still think it would be useful.

So in other words, here is where the art vs science limit is. If it looks good, it's good.
I'll do some thorough testing and see what looks best on a certain scene I guess.

Thanks James.

Hi all,

If a texture has white in it, then I need to darken the whole texture. Right?
But why should I darken the texture that has white in it, together with all the other colors in the texture, and not all other textures in the scene, that don't have such bright colors,  at the same rate?

Here Chaos suggests:
Quote
Each material component is calculated as LEVEL * COLOR (with 255 = albedo 1). So to decrease too high albedo of a white material, you can either:

leave diffuse color at RGB255 and lower diffuse level to about 0,7
or

leave diffuse level at 1 and change color to about RGB180

https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/articles/4528323859601-What-is-Albedo

It doesn't specify between just single colors and textures with millions of colors.

Why doesn't the corona material have the level value at 0.7 by default?
Would that be a good strategy to keep realism in ALL materials with and without diffuse textures?

Here CGTricks is sharing a script to automatically control this, but I 'm not sure if I should blindly trust in it. So I wanted to ask the Corona team about all this, including whether the script is a vialble solution for homogeneous Albedo control.

Thank you!

[Max] Feature Requests / Re: Tone mapping - Grouping
« on: 2024-02-02, 19:35:55 »
As I understand, the feature request is to be able to enable/disabled multiple operators at once, right?

Correct.
Foldering would be the other way to call it, other than grouping.

[Max] General Discussion / Re: Material Library / Management
« on: 2024-02-01, 21:09:42 »
Don't forget the built in .mat library can also load .max files as well. Which means you can actually load your libraries from previous projects which use the same material names, and replace them using your favorites/previous authored materials from an existing 3dsmax scene, or just populate the .mat with that .max file. Its more powerful than you might take it granted for since there's not many tutorials on the matter and whatnot, but its actually very powerful with lots of useful functions and from what I've seen over the years not used to its potential.

Attached is an example of loading a 3dsmax file with my favorite velvet, chrome, rubber materials etc. I can just re-use them from that project and then save them to my favorite .mat library if I choose to.

Another example is you can just right click on the chrome material > replace all "chrome" materials with this preset for example.

Yes. It just looks so...uninviting. But I'll try that first. Thanks James.

Thank you all for your feedback.

Siger vs project manager... hmmm.
It's good to have options :)

[Max] I need help! / Re: Corona Edge Map
« on: 2024-01-30, 17:01:01 »
Archviz Artist are showing a good use for it - coloring plant leaves, although the leaf borders need to be edges; opacity-mapped rectangles won't work.
https://youtu.be/1bBlGsngJhM?si=PbMeQjboC022Qco1

Another idea is VFX - for example imagine that a surface is fragmented into small parts (but larger than a single polygon). You can't use other maps there to color the borders of the fragments.

I used it with really good results to have white lines (street markings) all around streets and parking areas.

Siger, love it
Do you still use it? Thanks.

Good luck and thank you for the hard work!

You can use the CoronaRandomizer (Vegetation tools) if you like, it can color correct multiple diffuse/translucency selected materials/objects:

Thank you for the script.
I'm using it and all good so far.

For the devs: I still would like the base layer level to go above 1 though.

44
I started a Siger library a few years ago and dont use it now so I lost all my presets, dont get me wrong its a great plugin but I just dont need it for my workflow now so back to my old .mat workflow for now lol.
Good to know. I think I'll give the old .mat files a try.
Thanks James.

In the mean time you can always save your favourite materials to .mat files or use Design Connected - Connecter

I usually save all my favourite materials to .mat files since its built into 3dsmax

Thank you both.
I asked the question in the Vray forum.

I was thinking getting the Siger plugin, since it was very recommended here in the Corona forum.
