Hi,

recently, with release of Alpha 5, our forum activity raised a lot and with it also amount of posts, especially in gallery. While i definitely see that as a positive thing, I would prefer if a value of posts on this forum came out of their quality, not quantity. I understand many of you often post comments or congratulations in gallery just to encourage authors to use corona further and to show us as a warm and welcoming community, but i am really starting to be afraid we will become another Evermotion forum.

I would like to ask you all to help improve standards of this forum by putting a little more time into your post, and also not to post just for sake of keeping forum activity up. It would be great, if every post carried something constructive, as it would really add to the value of this forum and make majority of information stored here relevant.

Almost none of the 3D pictures are 100% perfect, and it helps a lot more if you point out what is the weakest aspect of the image or what you personally dislike, so the authors can work on it next time and improve themselves. Or if you just really like the image, then you can describe what is so catching about the image, so author can build on top of that to push it even further.

This is by no means order or a new forum rule, it is just my personal request to you all, and as we are an adult and intelligent community, i am sure most of you will understand what i mean. I would just like to avoid this forum being flooded by the kind of comments i used to name this thread ;)

There are also other sections like general discussion and offtopic, where you can create new discussion about pretty much anything and you are encouraged to do so. If you want to keep forum activity up, that is the way to do it. Some interesting discussions about CG industry, software, hardware, or just funny cat videos or bike riding may come out of this. And even those will still have a lot more value than simple non-constructive congratulations and praising.

PS: It would be a good idea to spread this thread around the forum by for example linking it in a reply whenever you feel like the discussion is going down to the Evermotion forum level :)

To clarify it...  i am not talking about gallery submissions but about primitive replies, such as:

"good work"
"nice render"
"nice, congrats"
"great work"
"really good"
"nice work"
"very good"

And similar kind of non-constructive comments.

So to answer to your post, i think it's a good thing but for the non english people on the forum, it's sometimes not really easy to explain and to give a critic of the image and some other who doesn't speak english at all are just glad to encourage some artist with just a "great work".

Well, I would say the same will eventually happen, it's simply tied to rate of content consumption nowadays. With the amount of work posted on Evermotion, and system it's moving, it's pointless to participate in any form of discussion,
even more so, when people really just want to show the work and won't follow up with answers.

At the moment, it might feel like (albeit growing big day by day) family sort of community, but it will sooner or later morph into the same. There is zero reason why this forum would follow absolutely different curve of evolution
than all the other ones, esp. when other, much bigger forums (like CGTalk) followed very similar fate.

Last but not least, not that anyone cares about rules anyway :- ) I presume no one ever read this properly.

I really want to congratulate you guys to your great job. Corona is really awsome.

At the moment im thinking of using it in a bigger commercial project that will start soon.
But this job will last till next year and the current licences will expire at the end of the year.

Can you tell what your plans for the near future, especially from 01.01.2015 are?

Hi everyone,
as I see it and for the jobs that place, more constructive comments would be welcome (especially to me because I'm still a wimp).
To avoid this you could leave the gallery section and use it as images rewarded by administrators or those with more likes, where the comments do not find much space. While using the WIP section as a general container to post images being processed and final images. Two containers that are very different, it's a bit of confusion.
As an Italian user, many of us are registered at https://www.c4dzone.com/it/, I invite you to visit it.
Mine is just an opinion, the directors can also not take note. ;) ;) ;)

It's funny cause on evermotion forum I've seen a post exactly like this, a moderator exasperated about "nice "good work" and so on... lol
I think maybe you need to allow some more diversity on forums like these and not do the usual ignore/disregard people who are not necessarily very techy and have a very specific gender. These forums are geeky boys clubs and we all know guys are generally not very good at talking. (lol)

This profession - 3d artist, CG artist etc, doesn't require only technical skills but also some artistic skills, an art background or at least some art theory and history knowledge and a lot of common sense. You don't have to be a computer scientist anymore to use a computer these days. So, my point is that forums like these don't encourage people to comment because of this attitude of exclusivity - most of the people are probably frightened to say smth that may seem wrong or not technical enough or who knows, usually guys in this profession are introverts and they have no idea how to express themselves.

Personally, here I barely get any attention when I post. I'm not totally ignored but it seems to me that maybe because I'm a woman I don't get much attention or maybe my posts are not interesting enough... However, I'm going to continue to post because I just love this profession like my life and I'm not going to be discouraged by anybody's attitude.

I use Corona from about 2015 and I'm using it since but I think for this forum to be useful you need to have proper feedback indeed.

Odd resurrection of thread :- )

I would not look too deep into lack of interaction. Specific platform forums were dying breed 6 years ago, and they are almost completely dead nowadays. If I look at CGArchitect, I see like 5 people writing 5 posts per year, so Corona forum is in comparatively good shape. What I am saying, even due to origin of this grumpy thread, there never really was any policing against simple posts (there are like two mods here and they have other worries).

Almost everyone and everything gets ignored here outside of few occasional bubbles of interest. In this day and age, everyone needs to create their own audience in whatever way they are capable of doing. From 2012 when I begun, I've seen the shifts from Forums (CG Architect, CGTalk, Evermotion,etc..) to social medias (Facebook), then specific platforms (Behance), then back to social media (Instagram,...). It's fickle ever moving train. I don't think we'll see a resurgence of some tight-knit community spending time giving constructive feedback to each other. I think that train is definitely gone. Dead.

And I wouldn't look at the other platforms for constructive feedback and authentic support either. It's pretentious rat-race, even with 100 thousand followers on Instagram for example, 99perc. of the audience would give you "Nice work!" but they wouldn't even mean it, it would just be copy&paste to manipulate you into looking at them (or just bot). At least "Nice Work!" posted on forums actually means the person liked it, and it was probably real person :- ).

Not like the feedback given by random strangers with specific tastes and little understanding of artist's intent was ever valuable or something. Most of the time it's unsolicited crap. And that leads to my final point:  It's best to be one's own critique, or create small community of close friends& acquitances you trust to give you good feedback. When someone you trust tell you the composition isn't working, it's much better than "Random Johny" telling you "haha, your chair is floating 1 cm above floor, see ! You're not so good and I am very smart to notice random unimportant shit!"

Definitely continue to post, perseverance is most important, most people here can't tell stranger's gender and even the most interesting posts might not stir attention. You could post the most beautiful archviz work and some grumpy cat would come tell you "another building ? I would have liked more star wars ships". Just post away and don't give slightest fuck.


PS: Or maybe we should all finally move to Reddit ? I can't wait for all those "Fellow Coronauts, I am the only one thinking....(plz click to actually read total nonsense)" :- )

I can confirm that people usually don't read the rules. If you don't get complimentary comments on your works, that's most likely not because people are discouraged to do so, but because of things that Juraj mentioned in his post. I think this "rule" is outdated and the topic probably needs to be unpinned. I can't remember that single congratz!!! post was ever deleted, or warning was issued for such reason.

thanks for your answer. No, sorry, it wasn't being fair to say that "because I'm a woman" I don't get attention, that was a stretch, I admit. I'm probably biased because of social media posts and the low percentage of women in this industry. But obviously it's nobody's fault here that this is happening, so I'm not blaming anybody. However...

there's a particular example I have in mind with a free a scene I posted recently out of genuine desire to help and share some of my experience with the community (being a test scene, an exercise and nothing original or creative). So I also posted this scene on evermotion forum and to be honest I have quite a similar amount of views but the major difference is that some people said: "thank you"... (it also got featured on the front page).
On the other hand, on this forum though nobody said absolutely anything like that, I had no replies apart from a reply from an administrator suspecting me of plagiarism. Of course, it's my fault because I should have been more specific with the credits and give the proper explanation of copyrights from the beginning.

it wasn't anything specific or a specific reason for me to mention the gender. It's probably that his scene is more interesting and in more demand and mine not so much. It's very tricky to judge things like that but generally, higher rated thigs tend to have more popularity non-popular things are not as good, so that would be a very basic judgement and I might just have to deal with that.

I actually think you misunderstood the question. From what I understood, maru just wanted to know under which terms the scene and all assets inside it can be re-used. A fair concern in my opinion, especially for a free giveaway training scene that people can freely download and play with.

yeah, sharing free stuff is often thankless job. For example when I donate to free software I use, I often get surprised responses like "wow, somebody actually did it" :D. Since we cannot change how this works, the only other options are to either stop doing this, or game the system. Most free stuff shared online is part of some bigger plan, e.g. software developer trying to get more people to use their software, educators showing off their skills, artists building personal brands, etc.
If you just want to know that you are making a difference, I would recommend putting in something simple such as "If you play with the scene, I would *LOVE* to see what you create, my email is xyz".

@Evalery - as Houska explained, my only concern was what exact license your scene is released under so that our team and other users would know. This is very important and often neglected by the creators. For example one can say "you can use this for whatever you wish, even without any kind of credit" (basically CC0 license) but also "you can use this for your images but always include my website address in a clearly visible place" or "you can use this only for personal tests", etc, and it's the user's obligation to find out what the specific license is. I asked this to clarify this for other forum users, and also in case we could use your scene for our tests and showcasing Corona features (obviously with proper credits!). So actually the main reason was that I was impressed with your work and wanted to clarify what the exact licensing is.
Sorry for the confusion, I will try to remember to include similar information in the future. I was not aware it could be misunderstood.

As to women in archviz and CG in general - I always find their works different (in a completely positive way!) and it's actually very hard for me to define this difference. Maybe women pay more attention to detail? I am not rally sure, but I can definitely spot it in the works of other female users here (there are actually quite a few examples on this forum). Why is there such disproportion between men and women in archviz? I don't really know. Maybe it's because guys are more into computer / technical stuff? (but is that really true?)

Fully agree with Maru´s last three sentences and I think we should maybe accentuate our female colleagues´ works more often.

Just "returned" from 3dsky one minute ago. Lots of great work with a special sense for detail comes from the ladies in the 3D business.
If you find - for example - outstandingly detailed 3D plant sets with hyper-detailed peonies, you can be sure it´s been made by a female artist.
A guy´s head would have exploded from having to be so patient while modeling. :))))

Communication over internet is hard... I recommend visiting some of the archviz conferences, you will see that almost everyone in the field is really nice person when you talk face to face. Additionally, Total Chaos had a panel with discussion about women in archviz, and I think there will be also one at this years siggraph.

You are describing quite accurately what's out there... I suppose I wasn't very aware of the situation on forums because it seemed to me people are still quite active, especially on the archvis ones... but yes, almost everyone seems to be self-centred on his own work and not caring about other people's work... it's also an oversaturation of images as more and more people are doing this, but it's normal, the number of people choosing a career in CGI (or related) will continue to increase because the population is increasing overall and also it becomes easier to use software, etc, we already know the reasons.   

I understand it's not necessarily a matter of gender but maybe you know the guy who owns CGarchitect, Jeff Mottle, he created "Women in ArchVis" group on fb and since it started we had quite a number of trolls posting stuff like "women shouldn't do this... because of various reasons (from biological differences between genders to professional incapabilities, etc) really upsetting stuff...and so on..." so... someone creates a group to encourage a certain segment of professionals and what you get is also a number of haters... so I was rather under the influence of haters... when I mentioned gender...

8 years ago, when I first went to SOA Academy Days in Venice, the most popular Archviz event, I swear I remember it correctly, there were 2-3 women attending out of 150 guests, including my studio co-partner (and now wife) Veronika. But as years went by, I would say solid 30perc. attending now are women. So it's not parity yet, but I would say much better than many technical industries. Archviz is unique blend of creativity and technical proves, but so is Architecture itself, and when I attended Architecture College in Prague (CVUT), 60perc. were women, so I believe it will not be long before it's much more than my guess-timated 30/70. (I know Jeff does industry questionaries, but this never reaches enough people).

I am never one for stereotyping but I would fully agree there definitely is currently a soft influence among many best women Archviz artists. Same timeframe, 8 years ago, Alfa Smyrna known as Pixela (she was also speaker at that first SOA event!) was respected to the same degree as Bertrand Benoit and Peter Guthrie were and not only was she as technical as Bertrand (that is achievement in itself) she did had that "soft touch" to renderings that was pointed to me back then by Veronika on example of her bedroom rendering, where (outside of perfect light, materials,et..) she also painted the wallpaper on wall, positioned blanket and coffee mug. Plus perfect technical knowledge, I remember seeing Bertrand asking her for BruteForce settings of Vray ( I remember all sort of odd stuff...rather perfect longterm memory, zero short term sadly).

6 years ago, Veronika and I worked on personal project of Parisian Bedroom. Back then, every bed looked super CGI but also boring, it wasn't paid any attention to. Veronika loves fabrics, sewing and knitting, so she tried to make that better, took her 10 days but the result was something different. And yeah, we had guys ask us (some former classmates from architectural school), why bother with something like bed ? But it proved revolutionary to our studio. Up to this day, we have clients who just come and ask for that messy bed. We literally wouldn't be where we currently are in business if Veronika didn't brought her unique perspective as woman.

If I were to start naming some super talented Archviz individuals, few women would easily come straight to my mind without much trying as well at least. Britta Wikholm, Lucia Frascerra,..in Lucia's work particularly you can see the soft influence, Nefeli Kallianou, Ewelina Lekka, etc.

I would say women definitely have solid foothold in the industry. Maybe not yet where it could be, but definitely on path there.

Veronika loves fabrics, sewing and knitting, so she tried to make that better, took her 10 days but the result was something different. And yeah, we had guys ask us (some former classmates from architectural school), why bother with something like bed ? But it proved revolutionary to our studio. Up to this day, we have clients who just come and ask for that messy bed. We literally wouldn't be where we currently are in business if Veronika didn't brought her unique perspective as woman.

If I were to start naming some super talented Archviz individuals, few women would easily come straight to my mind without much trying as well at least. Britta Wikholm, Lucia Frascerra,..in Lucia's work particularly you can see the soft influence, Nefeli Kallianou, Ewelina Lekka, etc.

I would say women definitely have solid foothold in the industry. Maybe not yet where it could be, but definitely on path there.

Thanks for the kind words about the women in the industry. I am also supporting women in archvis even though I'm not even an architect nor had architectural background (I studied fine arts, I was a graphic designer for many years) then learned 3d (in 2011) and that changed my life, I absolutely love it. I got into archvis by chance and it was a challenge with myself a lot. Communication over internet is hard... I recommend visiting some of the archviz conferences, you will see that almost everyone in the field is really nice person when you talk face to face. Additionally, Total Chaos had a panel with discussion about women in archviz, and I think there will be also one at this years siggraph.

Hi Ondra, yes, it's a lot better when you meet people at conferences and events believe me I would love to be able to attend every time. Lately, it became more difficult because we are parents but we (me&my husband who is a software developer) use to attend almost every industry event in London.
