Off-Topic / Notre Dame
« on: 2019-06-10, 15:20:20 »
Hi guys,

I'm considering entering a design into the current Notre Dame Cathedral re-build competition.

I'd like to get the work done as fast as possible (it's the only way I can justify spending time on a non-paying job). This probably means it'd be best to start with a nice, clean, usable 3D model of Notre Dame available.

My query;  does any friendly Corona user here have a nice model of Notre Dame cathedral they'd be willing to share?

Alternatively, would anyone else who is considering entering the competition be willing to go splits in buying a 3D model with me? (I know, I know, this probably violates user agreements, so this is certainly an unfavorable query...)

Just thought I'd throw this out there, thanks!

[Max] Feature Requests / Camera modifier panel
« on: 2018-09-17, 03:44:41 »
Hi all,

I'd be a really great time saver to have the ability to modify the corona camera parameters when either (or both) the camera or target is selected.

Currently, it takes 3DS Max a long time to load the modifier panel for the corona camera, and when I have both the camera and target selected I cannot edit the camera settings. I have to unselect the target and then wait for the modifier panel to then update.

So why can't we have the modifiers available when either the target is selected (seeing as the target can only be associated with a single camera anyway) or both the camera and target are selected?

Just a thought, would love to hear others opinions.

[Max] I need help! / Linking Environment to Camera
« on: 2018-09-10, 03:52:21 »
Hi All,

I'm sure this question has been raised before, but I'm unable to find any previous posts or info... so sorry if this is a noob question.

I have multiple cameras in my scene and varied environment HDRI's (and less importantly, different Corona sun positions) I'd like to use. Each camera has it's own respective environment that I must replace in the environment slot each time I render from a different camera.

Is there a way to automatically change the environment/hdri used when I change cameras, aka; linking an environment to a camera?

Any tips much appreciated!

[Scatter] I need help! / Sharp edges with scatter
« on: 2018-09-04, 15:33:59 »
Hi all,

I'm using the free viz-people grass (as a proxy) combined with Corona scatter to produce grass in my latest project.

As you can see in the screenshot, a persistent problem I have is that because the grass proxy is clumped into approx 50cm disc-shaped objects, occasionally some of the scattered proxies creep off the edge of the scatter base and onto other geometry. I'd like a clean edge to the grass...

Is there something I'm missing to get the sharp edges? Or is my best option to use smaller clumps of grass? What is the best practise here?

Cheers,

[Max] Resolved Bugs / DOF with shadowcatcher
« on: 2018-07-16, 17:03:40 »
Hi all,

I'm populating an interior apartment image (photograph) with 3D furniture. For this I'm using shadowcatcher with the image as a backplate.

One problem I'm having is that when I enable DOF on on the corona cam the invisible light (in the doorway) becomes visible. As soon as I disable DOF the light is no longer visible - which is correct.

Attached are both renders for comparison. I have tried setting the light as 'shadowcatcher illuminator' with no success.

Any help appreciated!

[Max] General Discussion / D.R. with VPN
« on: 2018-07-04, 11:37:11 »
Hi All,

I've recently subscribed to ExpressVPN. I like it, however it interferes with Coronas ability to find slave PC's and use D.R all together.

I know for certain that the VPN is the problem, as soon as I turn it off Corona is able to find my slave P.C and use it in rendering.

I've tried changing the "Network Adapter priority", as discussed in other topics, but this hasn't helped. I tried connecting to VPN on the slave, no luck.

Any other tips or ideas appreciated!

Edit: Changing some settings (using WLAN now) and disabling ExpressVPN by app allowed me to use D.R. again.

[Max] General Discussion / Moving to corona 2 mid-project
« on: 2018-07-02, 09:45:01 »
Hi all,

I'm new to Corona and still on my 45 day evaluation of version 1.7. I'm currently nearing the end of my first project with it but want to buy and upgrade to Corona 2.

Should I wait until this project is completed before upgrading, or are things stable enough that I shouldn't expect any potential issues with upgrading while I still have an active project running?

Any advice appreciated.

So... as we're taught in rendering to never use max RGB values (ie; pure white should be somewhere around 200, 200, 200 value, max!) what is the best way to ensure I accurately represent real-life colours in renders?

The reason I ask; I have an interior scene where I'm demonstrating varied wall colours. For example; the paint product "Tikkurila Symphony - F487", has an RGB value of 228 226 218. Obviously it's advised to not use these high values. So, what's the best method to 'downplay' (for lack of a better expression) these values to then accurately represent this colour?

Let's presume I'm using 255,255,255 colour tint and 6500 k white balance with no LUT.

Any tips appreciated. Cheers,

General CG Discussion / Rhino to 3DSMax
« on: 2018-06-12, 16:22:02 »
I know this has probably been discussed to death for the past 10 years... BUT, I still cannot find a suitable answer or solution to the problem of importing a clean model to 3DSMax from Rhino.

My goal is to have surfaces imported so they are non-triangulated. I would also really like to be able to edit the imported models (specifically with chamfers) - something which I'm struggling to do.

I know plenty of people model in and import from Rhino... whats everyone's preferred method?

Many thanks!

EDIT... I should note: I'm only wanting to import simple geometry - for example: walls (straight 90 degree corners) which are solid/capped polysurfaces. Nothing fancy. I essentially want to import walls, then chamfer them in 3DSMax. Any 'complex' geometry will be imported and unedited, basically.

[Max] I need help! / Corona Material scale
« on: 2018-06-12, 15:31:53 »
Hi All,

As I understand; all Corona materials (from the material library) are set to mm (millimeters). Is this correct?

I always work in MM, however occasionally, and I can't figure out why, how or when, the materials seem to apply at an entirely wrong scale (sometimes cm, sometime m, sometimes even bigger).

Any idea why this is happening? Am I missing something? My workflow is to usually import from Rhino, if that makes any difference. But I always start in mm, and import from Rhino in mm.

I'm new to 3DS Max/Corona, so please excuse potential amateur errors. Any help appreciated! Thanks.

General CG Discussion / Eucalyptus trees
« on: 2018-05-16, 16:31:11 »
Hello,

As a visualizer from the Southern Hemisphere I regularly need to render Eucalyptus trees... but high-quality versions of these are very rare/basically non-existent.

Does anyone have any ideas where I should find some decent Gum Trees (Eucalyptus trees)? Willing to purchase, of course!

Cheers!
