Just updated to 2024.1 and it still happens.  And for me it's not how long Max has been open, but rather the scene size.  I just opened a large scene, messed with the new slate material editor, and tried to close it after 5 minutes of being open.  It's been sitting there for at least 5 waiting to close....

Latest DB of corona, latest forest pack, Windows 10, 3970x w\ 128gb ram.

I stumbled upon another discussion on this topic over in the autodesk forums. No success in fixing it there either.

Hello everyone, I am a designer from China. I also encountered the problem of slow closing speed of MAX some time ago, but after I used the plug-in to disinfect the file, the problem improved. I have read about the impact of file viruses on the operation of MAX. The virus may be infected after we download the model, and then affect the reading and writing speed of the entire 3DMAX file. If the reading and writing speed of the file is still very slow after anti-virus, I suggest you save it several times before closing the file, and then close 3DMAX. Then use the task manager to close the software directly. I will report this problem to 3DMAX officials later to seek a complete solution.

Which plug-in did you use?

In my case, this kind of thing stopped completely in Max 2024 so it leads me to believe it's a Max thing. Max was also leaving memory dump files in the CrashDumps folder (C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\CrashDumps) which I had to clean out often as each dump was 600+ Mb so the folder tended to grow to 5+ GB within 2 - 3 days.

I remember this from years ago when I worked on a network but now I work locally I don't get this hang. Try this:

If you 3dsmax is hanging, pull out the ethernet cable. Wait about 3-5 seconds, if the problem is resolved then its because of the network/asset location.

If not, carry on.

I only use local files today, or rather did for past 2 years. And still this issue started only few months ago. So that definitely wasn't aspect of it I believe.

Yeah, definitely not the case for me.

Few years ago, I had problem like this with V-Ray. After weeks search, I found a "SceneCleaner_Startup.ms" script from AD support
(https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/3ds-Max-Scene-file-takes-a-long-time-or-slow-to-open.html)

I put it in max root\scripts\Startup folder.
Evertime open scene, it will clean "garbages" and popup a windows show statement.
After clean, magic happen, the scene can close smoothly.
But remeber save the scene file before close it.

Ensure DESELECT everthing of the scene when in cleaning, or it will slow down the clean process :)

Well, AD update the support page and SceneCleaner script (could be founded and downloaded on the bottom of article in the linking page).
And please read the official instruction on the page before use it.

Hey, I downloaded this script. Seems to work OK!

But you mention deselecting ... I don't see any options? Is this the correct script?

This script is automated with no other options available.
Generally, it can be completed within a few seconds.
However, during its execution, you can still select objects in the scene, which seems to slow down execution speed, especially when you select many objects.
Strange script from AD :)

I had these issues with scenes not regarding huge or semi huge file size - that max really takes ages to close, while it closes very fast if its an empty scene.
First i thought it has something to do with all the loaded material and multi-submaterials as they are known to slow down max.

But whenever i use prune scene and clear most of the selections (except missing bitmaps, empty layers and animation keys) ... the scene/max will close as fast as expected.
I haven't checked every single option in prune scene to figure out what is really causing the huge lag time to close max - not really find time to figure it out yet.

(using max 2020, corona 10, itoo forrestpack/railclone, multitexture (yes i know its causing troubles with forrestpack) / ryzen 5950)
