Hi, just checking if material converter for Mental Ray -> Corona works?

I got a scene, converted it, but it failed big time. Perhaps I'm missing Mental Ray plug-in (I'm using max 2021)?

Thanks for any advice...

You are indeed missing Mental Ray, it was removed from Max a few versions ago.

Nah, it's easier: The 2020 plugins work for 2021 as well so that converters can access at least all materials. Just copy over <MaxDir>\Plugins\Nvidia\* from a 2020 installation to Max2021 and then open scene and convert to Corona - done.

Edit: Hmm the converter does not convert the Arch&Design materials. I could have sweared this has been my setup to convert mr objects. I can see the material, but the converter does nothing - have to investigate.

Edit: No idea why it is not working (any more?) here. I can access the materials, but the Corona converters (old 1.45 one and current) do nothing. Using Max2020, converting works.

Hmmm... bummer!

Thanks for the research guys, much appreciated.

So my best option is to install max 2019(?) and open the asset there, convert it to Corona and then migrate it back?

Hi aaouviz,

if it is no issue for you to install 2019 then maybe yes. Meanwhile I recalled how it worked using Max 2021 though:

- use the Max 2020 plugins as described previously
- type "Arch___Design__mi=Arch___Design" into maxscript listener
- launch Converter 1.45

Those different material class names in 2020 and Max 2021 (despite using the same plugins) were the reason why the Converters did not convert anything. I modded the 1.45 Converter to convert "Arch___Design" just like "..._mi" (it's just adding/changing 2 lines) but I found out that it works as well if issuing that command above in the max script listener before starting the converter. So it's up to you :) But make sure you use the "old" converter 1.45 - the current one still for example creates transparent materials if refraction=1 and refraction color=black. And old mr assets tend to be setup like this.

I hope you don't get offended... but I'm just being a bit cautious.

The zip contains a *.exe not a script... so I'm curious how exactly it works? Obviously i'm hoping to convert mental ray to corona... but I don't see how this happens outside of max.
