I'm thinking its somehow related to the colors you see displayed on the top of each NME shader / material. Not sure I know what grey means lol.

I don't think i ever saw the grey marking in SME either. Maybe it's some special version of 3ds Max? :]

I seem to get red, or nothing at all - this depends on whether it's set to render fully in the viewport (in which case it's red, e.g. Show Realistic Material In Viewport), or not set to render fully in the viewport (in which case I have no colored part to the bar at all, just solid blue). It is a Max thing of course, not a Corona thing.
