Ok, so it IS the sugar cubes material applied to many intersecting elements. The solution is to either:

-disable translucency
or
-enable custics

It should render fine then.

This is interesting, so @Tom please report this through our internal tracker (the point is that it renders with different speed in 1.7 and v2/3, what is causing the issue, and what are the solutions).

Yes, without hardcore sugar, everything works much faster! )
In general a many of overlapping refractive objects cause this problem.
I understand that this is an individual problem, a rare case. And I think it can be bypassed in a fake way .. But I hope that in the future it will be taken into account for optimization purposes.
