[Max] I need help! / Re: Ctrl+Z (Undo) Crashing Max

"The 3ds Max Security Tools are installed by default in recent copies of 3ds Max, and updated versions are available directly from the Autodesk App store. To make sure the Security Tools are active, do the following: In 3ds Max, go to Customize > 3ds Max Security Tools. Make sure the Enable Protection button is checked."

The page you linked too also shows the same screenshot I attached, but it demonstrates that it'll automatically tell you if an update is needed.  Either way I installed the latest one and reopened the scene.  Nothing happened.

I'll make it happen shortly and upload the mini dump

Hi Aram

If I'm not mistaken, isn't that script a default part of the Max install these days?

[Max] I need help! / Ctrl+Z (Undo) Crashing Max
« on: Yesterday at 12:44:49 »
Has anyone experienced Ctrl+Z or Undo in general consistenly crashing their scenes?  I'm in Max 2024 and Corona 11 - pretty sure it's a Max issue though.

But I'll start a new scene and everything works fine for a while.  Then (randomly) Ctrl+Z will crash Max, and from this point, any instance of Ctrl+Z in that scene results in a crash.  The rest of the scene works fine but once I've had that initial crash - Ctrl+Z becomes a no go zone.  It's driving me insane.

or you'd have to look at Solo pricing today.

Please send me a link to an option to purchase solo with a floating licence

I'm literally comparing what I paid in October 2022, to what I would have to pay today if I wanted the same thing.  Phoenix, Scans and all that nonsense that nobody asked for is no longer optional.  But I have to buy premium if I want the floating licence so, whether or not it comes with all the bloatware isn't our doing.

And this is the problem.  You're forcing us to pay for stuff we don't want/need.  How many people were using Phoenix, Scans, Cosmos etc before hand?

I have to compare to Premium because there's no alternative to get the floating licences.

I'll go back to my shopping analogy.  You're shopping is now 7666 euros, you're horrified, but the cashier tells you "but we've included a bundle of car cleaning equipment previously worth X amount and a new BBQ that you would have had to pay for separately last time you came in" the problem is you don't drive or own a car and you live in a studio apartment.  Do you just go, oh excellent, they're really useful to me so I'm happy to pay the extra?

There shouldn't be an 88% price increase except in one particular scenario. This figure would only be true in one specific case - you once had Corona 7 with 3 free render nodes, which you cancelled, and now you return, as the render nodes are no longer free. (But they did stay free if you did not cancel your license and it's been running since before Corona 8).

Also as a note even then most of that price increase would have been true 2 years ago with the release of Corona 8, when free render nodes were discontinued. The difference between Corona + 2 render nodes in 2022 and Corona + 2 render nodes in 2024 with the latest price change is also nowhere near an 88% price increase.

So most users are not seeing anything near as dramatic as an 88% price increase.

EDIT - also this is only true if you choose Premium, which includes Phoenix and more, which were not included in the Corona 7 and earlier licenses and had to be purchased separately. So the 88% increase is not comparing apples to apples. There is still the Solo license, which is much more like what the old Corona 7 and earlier licenses were.

You're missing a few points here Tom.  The average freelancer doesn't need the software 24/7 365.  Their income is sporadic as is their workload.  So the whole allure of monthly was that you could drop it and pick it up again as and when you needed it at an affordable price point.  But if the response is "you cancelled so blame yourself for losing out" it kinda defeats the object of the rolling monthly subscription in the first place.

I'm pretty sure I did an exact apples for apples comparison of the price increase in another thread and it was over 1000% in the last 24 months - don't fact check me on this

The other point that weighs heavily for freelancers is that they can work from anywhere, they're not 'node locked' by nature, but Chaos have gone and made Solo node locked.  The floating licence element of our older subscriptions was a major element that you haven't addressed at all.  This forced a lot of us to choose Premium over Solo.

So let's really compare apples with apples.

Monthly Corona Floating License + 3 Render Nodes

October 2022 = 30 Euros a month

March 2024 = 259.86 Euros a month

That is a 766.2% increase in the space of 17 months however you decide to look at it.

Yes that is for that specific scenario but either way it's still obscene.

By way of comparison - 3DS Max Indie costs 420 euros for an entire year.

Can you imagine if you went and did your monthly shop in October 2022 and it cost for example, 1000 euros, then you decided not to shop there for a few months, and when you went back in in March 2024 and bought the exact same things, the cashier tells you the total is 7666 euros.  You'd lose your mind or laugh in their face and walk out leaving your shopping on the conveyor belt.

Another good business case for getting a dedicated edge outline shader rework aka all those requests for the equivalent edge control of VRay Toon.

Theoretically yes.  Practically/Optimally no.  Especially when Vray Clipper is a simple checkbox to achieve the exact same thing.

Shouldn't it be possible to incorporate this option into the slicer material?  Inside/Outside checkbox?  Do you need me to make an official feature request?

No need for it, it has been already reported :)

Perfect thanks

I guess the solution is make you backgrounds spherical and use them in the environment override slot rather than on a cyclinder.

Hey Aram

I tried to explain further up, but not having this feature does directly affect how big my phoenix grid needs to be which in turn affects the simulation time drastically.

As you can see in the video I linked to, the last step is reducing the final grid to just the area of focus, then enabling 'ocean' mesh to fill the rest outside of the sim grid, and then clipping the ocean mesh to your desired shape.  But we can't do that because slicer won't let us.  As you've said yourself, you'd need to shell and then clip, but how do you create an infinite shell to clip an infinite ocean?

So instead, we have to use 'Cap Mesh' instead of 'Ocean Mesh'.  Cap mesh unfortunately doesn't have the same effect as ocean mesh in terms of filling outside of the sim grid.  So I have to make the sim grid slightly bigger than the pool in my instance then clip using the shell method.  But this means my sim grid is now wayyyyyy bigger than it would be if I could use ocean mesh.

See attached, you can see my two sim grids in green.  If slicer allowed us to clip in the same way as vray clipper, then I could reduce that larger sim grid covering the entire pool to roughly the size of the one i've drawn in blue, as i'm only interested in the splash/foam at the base of the waterfall and not the entire 12m long pool

Unfortunately that won't work in this situation as i'm trying to clip an infinite ocean.  It's a really neat trick to keep Phoenix sims efficient.  The video I linked to explains it really nicely.  So I'm having to increase my simulation grid to the entire size of the pool (12m x 6m) and use cap mesh instead of ocean mesh and then clip as you've described.

Boolean modifier? In recent 3ds Max boolean was reworked to the level that there's very little excuses not to use it.

I found it incredibly unstable (and slow) when working with heavy geometry.  I dread to think what it's like with a high density phoenix sim but I'll give it a go.  Still would be nice if Corona had a 'clipper' that was as fully featured as VRay's

i.e. keep the inside bit and slice away the outside bit.
At the moment you cann't do that.
A solution shoud be to create the slicer geometry "inverse".
Some times ago i asked for option like: Slice_inside / Slice_outside.

Sigh, another half baked entry to add to the list.  It was introduced in V8, seems like a pretty basic feature to have implemented by now.  If that one feature existed I could reduce my phoenix sim time by hours/days

How do I get Corona Slicer to do the opposite of what it's doing in my attached screenshot?  i.e. keep the inside bit and slice away the outside bit.

I'm trying to replicate the setup here done with Vray Clipper (14 mins) and clip a Phoenix Ocean Mesh to to specific shape
