This is the LUT error that has been present for the last 2 daily builds.
This seems to be Mac related as I've had a few reports of this but nothing for Win so far. Are you able to do a custom install and unpack the installer contents to a folder? Does this include a LUTs folder?

custom folder works very well... but lut from library... gives error message.

...
Thanks for letting me know!

The LUT error seems to have been fixed in the latest build!  🙌🏻

Thanks guys!

This may also offer some insight:
https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/12000033420-what-is-the-difference-between-corona-bitmap-and-3ds-max-bitmap-node-

That's really useful, thanks.

The reason I kicked off this thread was because I loaded a 4k texture (parquet floor) into the Corona Bitmap shader and it took aaaaaages to load in the material browser.  The it kept stalling and trying to refresh the preview. I converted it back to a standard bitmap and it loaded instantly.

I'll see if this happens again in the new daily build but it seems odd considering it's intended to be a quicker solution... 🧐

I think CoronaBitmap will be more important when Corona materials become cross-platform. Similarly to nkilar, i rarely use CBitmaps too, except for loading HDRIs, where it has noticeable speed advantage and superior projection modes.

noted, thanks. I'll give that a whirl

Any further memory optimization update...?
In a small studio setup scene... getting error message and no displacement used.

Thanks.
...

I get the same issue with 64 gig of RAM on an iMac Pro, particularly with large scenes though.  Rendering at 4k with a list of about 15-20 multipass layers (mostly lightmix layers).

It doesn't happen too often.  More so when I have a scene with a lot of 3D people, vegetation and lights (night scenes) .

I have started to notice that my renders have a tendency to freeze at a certain point.  Typically when I get to a noise level of about 5-6%. I'm not sure if this is linked to the RAM shortage...  I normally take note of the time of the crash and render again with a shorter time limit as it always freezes at the same point without the ability to save the output.

Side note:  Has anyone else noticed that sometimes Corona fails to save an output for the multipass?  The render will output just fine, then occasionally there will be no saved file for the multipass.  Then, if I render again, it may save the next time.  This has happened a few times lately.

Is it also normal for the render to output with the bloom and glare applied?  Again, this is hit and miss.  Sometimes it is applied, sometimes it isn't.  But it is always applied to the lightmix pass...

Thanks

Yeah this topic has not really set the world on fire...

I've not been using it so far and haven't seen a reason for it other than in conjunction with the tone map control. However, it must be there for a reason??

Hi guys,

Just a quick question...

Is it good practice to load all bitmaps within a Corona bitmap shader? Until now I have been loading bitmaps directly in to the diffuse texture slot.  I was having a play with Tone Map Control and couldn't get it to function properly.  With all the exposure, LUT & tone mapping checkboxes unticked, the output looked garish and compressed.  Not at all as expected.  Then I tried loading the bitmap in the Corona bitmap shader and hey presto... it worked! 😃

This got me thinking, have I been loading textures incorrectly all along and should all bitmaps sit within the Corona bitmap shader??

Does it make any noticeable difference?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Ayee, with a fresh scene...

Hi,

I am trying to reproduce this issue right now, but I am not successful. Can I ask you what the exact procedure is? I created a scene in an older version, then opened it in the latest version and everything works so does it depend on aspect ratio or camera angle or anything else?

Thank you
Nikola

I've found this happens when the aspect ratio is altered.  If the renderable area matches the viewport windows aspect then it's fine.  As soon as you try to render a different ratio (portrait for example), you get a 'zoom' effect.

Got the file, I'll take a look. Without looking at it though, it would seem accurate with the light source being so small. I'll need to do some tests...

Thanks.  It just appears to be far too sharp considering the distance from the objects casting shadows.  I've done loads of pool scenes of a similar nature in vray and can never recall having this issue.

Hi guys,

I have attached a lightweight version of the scene for you to poke at.  please let me know if you find any gremlins...

well..

viewport/render v 05.09.2018:

see the difference... exactly same file on both.

I'm getting the same thing. Only in the viewport render though.   However, it only happens if I render at a different ratio to the viewport.  EG if I render landscape it's fine.  If I render portrait, it's enormously cropped.  It's not taking the image ratio from the render settings in to account...

Can we have the scene? :)
(or a stripped version of it, with just the lights and the ceiling)
https://corona-renderer.com/upload

Yes, I'll upload a lightweight version of the scene shortly.

How you made bacground? Did you turn off the light if it's lightMTL for plane/ Also try to change or turn off hdri, i think it  goes from hdri sampling

The background is added in post.  I rendered separately with all the lights / light materials removed so I am positive it is the pool lights.  I'll do another test render and attach.

Judging by the shadows' directions, it looks like sharp shadows are produced not by the pool lights, but by the ceiling lighting. Did you check that?

yes, I turned off all but the pool lights.  I also checked that it wasn't the mesh tearing as that has been known to happen (when lazily modelling with splines....)

The lights are regular corona lights

My first guess would be that the light size is just too small for the scene. What's the disc radius and are the scene/system units set up correctly?

Good Luck

the radius is 2cm, roughly correct for a small spot light.  But if I make the disc 20cm for instance, the error persists.

Hi all,

I am using an HDRI for the external lighting but in a separate test I turned off all but the pool spots so I can confirm it is definitely them causing the sharp shadows.

With regards to the size, this still occurs if I make the lights much larger.  It seems to happen irrespective of the size.  My scene set up is to scale and the same default 'starting scene' that I use in every project.  however, I have never seen this before.

As I mentioned before, even using an ies light doesn't work.  My only suspicion is that the lights are excessively bright.  Although, regardless of how bright they are, I can't imagine I should be seeing such sharp shadows...
