can anyone tell my why there is this big difference in performance between IBL and Corona lights?

When using same number of passes, the IBL approach is noticably more noisy.

Not sure what you mean by IBL...  IBL workflow in corona is simply putting a map in environment slot.

Posting pictures would help a lot.

image based lighting
so hdri or exr in environment map slot ... exactly as you said

now when I've been rendering images to better describe the "problem" everything seams fine... I think i had checked rendering by time rather than individual passes, so that caused the problem

but still, speed is an issue when using HDRI vs lights

Weird...  when it comes to spherical lights, they can be sampled very well, cause it's an analytic sphere. Not sure if that's your case. Non the less, it should not make THIS much difference. We will have to wait for Keymaster to answer this...
