IR not working

I have a project that will occasionaly hang and has to be task-manager-terminated /// With work lost as a result

There's no other way around it, it'll just hang when I want to boot the IR.

Any similar experiences?

I don't remember having experiencing that.
Maybe a driver issue?
I now run a couple of scripts on regular basis on my scenes to avoid unpleasant situations like yours: I run Stock Model Fixer, SiNi Forensic and Prune Scene. They will get you rid of unnecessary things in your scene that can cause instability over time. Maybe give them a try?
