[Max] I need help! / Light portal situation...
« on: 2016-09-05, 19:11:53 »
I'm modelling an interior scene and the ceiling has a few grate objects that can see out to the sky. I have attached an image that shows the top of one of these grates (though we see them from underneath). I have an existing single quad light portal inside the red lines, but the portal object shares a coplanar space with some of the geometry of the grate(example areas marked in green).

The question I have: is it more efficient to put lots of tiny quad portals inside each grate hole, or keep the existing single quad even with the coplanar faces it shares?

I hope what I wrote makes sense.

I've been able to create 'combined' single materials by using a mix map on every input using the same mask (Tom G has one of my test scenes with an example of this). Though this only works if the inputs you want to use are all exposed.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why can't you use a CoronaMix map in the glossiness slot between your clean and dirty glossiness values using an image mask? No need for a layered material...

Also, way too costly for a studio license for a couple of rocks and some twigs...$3k+? Come on...

[Max] Resolved Feature Requests / Re: Open VDB support

I thought I'd add another +1 for VDB support. I understand if there hasn't been any more movement on this with the impending 1.5 release a few weeks away, but has there been any thought on implementing this in the release after 1.5?

Another vote for Houdini (which is not on the list).

Great!

What were the render times like for those images (and on what kind of hardware)? Are you able to tells us about your render settings and lighting set up too?

Another follow up question: what is the intended workflow for rendering on Linux? Would we be able to write out files using Corona that describe the scene, then render those scene files? Like how Arnold writes out .ass files and then Arnold renders those files.

Has there been any progress on this? Will this be ready for the 1.5 release? I only ask because it's not listed on the Trello road map page.

I know this isn't very fancy, but I orient a perspective view perpendicular to the physical camera, turn on DoF, then eyeball the focal point, and animate the focus pull manually where necessary on shots that need it. I get a much more realistic look if the focal point isn't always exactly-to-the-millimetre where it should be.

[Max] I need help! / Re: Render a animation problems!
« on: 2016-08-03, 08:44:18 »
Funnily enough, I saw this exact same problem when I used an online render farm service a couple of months ago. I would submit a render, then on the frames I got back, every 10th frame or so would lose its reflection. I finally found out from the render farm service, that all of the problem frames came from a single computer, and I suggested they they either fix that installation, or remove that computer from the Corona pool.

For the greatest level of control, I do all comp in comp, not in the render (I have no use for Corona's post effects). I will test to see if I can get a tight glow to look any good with the aliased light in comp, though obviously even if this works, it's just a temporary bandaid fix :D

523
Unfortunately, I am rendering an animated short film, and at this point am unable to spare much more of my meagre resources :(

524
Followup note: to be fair to the above test, ART is using a pixel filter of 3, where as Corona was using a value of 2, so I did another test, with a value of 3 in Corona, and it still didn't look as anti-aliased as ART, but a little more than in the above image..

525
I just did a test using the ART renderer (which I have never used before until now), and the aliasing is much better than Corona when rendering a light. The pixel spread of the anti-aliasing of the right edge of the ART light is more than twice as wide as the Corona light.
