Hi, you need to select the instanced object(s), not the actual Forest object. It's the same with Scatter.

[Max] Bug Reporting / Re: Backplate + Sun causing shadow bug
« on: Yesterday at 15:25:37 »
If I remember correctly, the current bug is a side-effect of fixing another bug. It is possible that it didn't happen in some very old versions of Corona.

[Max] I need help! / Re: Interactive rendering slows down.

I've found this article: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/08/amd-explains-promises-partial-fixes-for-ryzen-9000-performance-problems/
Here are the highlights, maybe they would be worth trying:

- update your chipset driver
- update your BIOS
- disable core parking - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/1524213/remove-parked-status-of-cpu
- disable core isolation and virtual machine platform - https://www.makeuseof.com/windows-disable-two-virtualizations-game-performance-boose/
- go to BIOS and set CPU SoC voltage from the default 1.25V to 1.2V and Infinity Fabric (FCLK) to 2000 MHz
- change your power plan in Windows (try all available options, power saving, high performance, etc)

[Max] I need help! / Re: Caustics flickering (corona 12)
« on: 2025-02-07, 17:00:43 »
The UHD/4K Cache settings are irrelevant to caustics. It may not always be possible to render animations with caustics and acceptable time/quality.
Quote
The caustics solver uses a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm, which means each frame in an animation (or even rendering the same frame twice) will have a different pattern in the noise. To avoid flickering in animations, you will have to render a significant number of passes to ensure the solution has converged.

Having said that, feel free to send your scene over to https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and we will investigate.

Since Photoshop doesn't "see" the extra elements without 3rd party plugins, I guess the same could be the case with After Effects. It's either Photoshop/AE problem, or the way 3ds Max stores the data. In any case, it's not a Corona issue.

6
Unfortunately, it seems this is not accessible via maxscript. System settings are written to a file at C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\20xx - 64bit\ENU\en-US\plugcfg\corona\SystemSettings-xxx.conf

I was having exactly the same problem, but then I installed https://www.exr-io.com/ and it turns out the render elements were there all the time. So it seems Photoshop for some reason does not recognize the baked-in render elements by default. I guess you were opening your output in Photoshop, right?

Hardware / Re: how much difference does the ram speed do?
« on: 2025-02-06, 10:49:22 »
We have multiple reports of problems with 9950X CPU - https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=43755.0
We are not sure what is causing them. I would advise getting a different CPU until we know what exactly is happening. It seems to be related to Windows Update.

Yes, this can happen if Corona detects that you are inside a volumetric (including refractive) material. This may happen in some unexpected cases like having an object with no thickness (e.g. a plane) above or close to the camera.

Here, under "disable volumetric effects" you can find a script which removes volumetric effects from all scene objects. Please backup your scene and try it: https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/articles/4528592571537-Corona-renders-black-screen-3ds-Max

If it doesn't help, then most likely the issue is related to refraction without any additional volumetric effects. The solution would be to make sure that there is no object with no thickness using a refractive material in the scene. As Aram noted, it could be a window object using refractive glass instead of "thin" glass.

[Max] I need help! / Re: Viewport slow with Cosmos open
« on: 2025-02-05, 18:26:41 »
For Erik1974 the issue of lagging when the Cosmos window is open was fixed by installing the newest version of Corona (Corona 12 Update 1 Hotfix 1) - https://www.chaos.com/corona/download

[Max] General Discussion / Re: Corona 12 and Vantage
« on: 2025-02-05, 17:49:10 »
Good catch, fixed, thanks! For some reason I cannot connect controllers to Corona Physical Mtl properties, not sure why, I think they worked in the past. As a workaround, you can use Corona Color with white color and adjust its output multiplier.

Hi, please contact us here https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
Please attach to your report a minidump captured during the crash - here is how to do it, see point 1 or 2 depending on the case: https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/articles/4649117083409-How-to-report-issues-3ds-Max
Please also send us any scene where this happens, even if it's just a box.

Thanks in advance!

Does it work if you switch to another renderer? I am asking because, as far as I know, these saving options are controlled purely by 3ds Max.

This is now re-reported as (Report ID=SCATTER-198).

[Max] General Discussion / Re: Displacement is still rubbish
« on: 2025-02-05, 10:54:06 »
Regarding the original report from dj_buckley, it wasn't related directly to Corona displacement, but to the way geometry is painted with the Wire/Round Edges maps. The ideal solution here would be having a proper toon shader. If you would find this feature useful, you can vote for it here: https://chaoscorona.ideas.aha.io/ideas/CMAX-I-16
