Title: New workstation :New Threadripper 3960X or 3970X or Ryzen 3950X
Post by: lukx on 2019-11-10, 09:33:50
Okay finally time to upgrade my workstation. I was waiting and waiting for 7nm AMD and here it is. Now the problem which one to go with.
For me it’s not only rendering but lot of modeling in 3dsmax and multitasking (rendering in Corona and Redshift, zbrush sculpting at the same time etc.) Also cloth and particle simulation. So I need one powerful workstation that can do it all
Is it worth getting the 32 core beast 3970x or a bit overkill and go with 24 cores as it’s 100mhz (3.8Ghz) base clock faster which is important in 3dsmax as it’s one core app.
I’m not sure about Ryzen 3950x as I read that it will require water cooling and because if Threadripper size I assume air is still good and quieter option.
Whats your take an all this?

Wait for benchmarks, no other way to know what actual performance differences will be right now.

"Optimized for Watercooling" is probably the strangest marketing nonsense pulled ever. It's 105W TDP chip which doesn't by itself say much but the heat output will be by default +/- 150W (without all-core PBO overclock), less than Threadrippers. It's smaller die though and smaller heatspreader making it harder to cool, but that goes for AIO vs Air towers likewise.

Noctua NH-D15, U12a (not U12s or U14s) will still be superior to almost any AIO on market bar few exceptions.

Theres apparently a 3990WX with 64 cores coming

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X = 40s
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X = 32s

The 3970x is 200mhz slower on boost clock but 200mhz faster on base clock. In terms of single core the benchmarks I've been seeing the threadrippers are pretty close to the 3950x in gaming.

In terms of multithread apps the 3970x seems to be a good step up from the 3960x (which is benching better than the 2990wx)

If you can afford the 3970x I'd go in on that. It's single thread is just shy of the 3950x but it's mutlticore is really unmatched. The amount time you'll save in mutlticore apps makes it more than worth it in my opinion.

As others mentioned the cpu to rule them all is a 64 core 3990x beast supposed to come out early next year.
