I think it's a matter of getting hole sizes right. Of course 3D having holes made with geometry instead of simple opacity on a flat plane also adds quite a lot. Corona pattern here is the perfect tool for the job.

I think that's perfect example where using Corona pattern would make more sense than using displacement.

That is expected behaviour. Blur in 3ds Max is used to avoid aliasing, its results depends on texture size in rendered image - the smaller texture will be, the more it will be blurred. If you want that blurring would stay constant independently on texture's size, you need to use blur offset, not the blur. You can read about this in Max's documentation: https://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2024/ENU/?guid=GUID-8AE3643F-BDB4-498B-B220-92646FC8A562

Look at AI upscaling your textures. Programs like Gigapixel, does pretty good job at that.

Actual rendering resolution can always be seen on the top of the VFB, that's why maru asked to show it. Also, in recent Corona versions you can separately set resolution for IR. I can't show where exactly this setting is located in render setup, since i'm 3ds Max user, but you should be able to find it somewhere next to performance settings.

I just cropped actual image pixels from the first screenshot - it's bigger, than 2048px. Mystery solved.

Did you read carefully all the requirements in maru's post above? Specifically about resolution?

To be honest, i prefer HQ filter over any other, too bad it's not compatible with AI denoisers and since having noise free image in a fraction of time is more important than having nicer looking noise, there's little sense to go with anything else but Intel denoiser + Tent. I agree that Corona team could evaluate an option to make it the new default.

No one is going to use Corona Toons,

That's a bold claim. Did you do large scale survey before come to this conclusion? People has been asking for outline and NPR rendering in Corona for years. I think someone will be using and be pretty happy about the new features.

and the Firefly fix should have been a fix in some update because it's a bug.

In that spirit you could call rendering one giant bug, because it slowly resolves from almost pure noise to clean image. It should give you perfect image instantly, otherwise it's a bug :]

There will always be someone who are not happy with any new feature in the release, because they are not useful to him, but remember that there are people who waited those features for years and they can't wait to start using them. Maybe next version will be full of features that are useful to you? ;]

Not to derail the topic about the AI thing, but that video about the intel denoiser used with tent really changed the game.

May i ask, what filter and denoising combo you were using before? I always set Intel denoiser and tent filter as default after each new version install since it doesn't work with HQ filter and i find it quite amusing that apparently it's a new discovery. Oh, and i completely agree with you about that rage about 2X scale - i did some short tests and my findings was that out of 3 very different scenes it kinda worked ok'ish in one of them, but the other two were clearly inferior to just simple rendering at native rez.
