I'm wondering if there is an unbiased, physically correct subsurface light transport model in Corona.  I don't mind render times. I would like to use it to simulate different material densities and how light interacts with several objects as it moves through them.

General CG Discussion / 3dsMax viewport unsuable
« on: 2017-11-11, 02:49:16 »
I'm not used to working with huge scenes, I do mostly product rendering, but my latest project requires using a client-provided model with about 2 million polis. The viewport is unusable at around 1fps even with the quality at the lowest setting. I think the viewport is all GPUs work, but Windows GPU monitor shows a mere 5% utilization. Same for CPU. 5-10% and about 30% ram. So my system does not seem to be overloaded in any way, and yet, the viewport is unusable.  I'm running a GTX1080 in case it helps to know, max 2017.

I know the right thing to do would be to use proxies etc... but this is a client model and I need to work on it fast, no time to rebuild.

[Max] I need help! / Shadow Catcher for compositing.
« on: 2017-11-06, 07:04:57 »
Hello, I'm trying to find the best workflow for corona shadow catcher and compositing. I followed a couple of tutorials, but still can't get the result I'm looking for.

My setup is a giant ground plane, giant wall in the horizon, shadowcatcher material assigned to both, video backplate and corona sun + sky.

Attached is an image with my results for you to see, here is my problem:

If I render in Always solid mode, I get the best result (see shadows over buildings #1 , see reflections on the ground #2) However, the render is slow and I loose the flexibility to color correct in after effects independently from the background.

If I render in For compositing mode, I get all the flexibility, but when I add the alpha, shadows don't look as nice #1, and I loose reflections completely, #2 and #3)  In my mind, For compositing + alpha should look almost identical to the Always Solid render, right?

The third option is  Always solid + alpha, Shadows are a little better, maybe the best, but I loose reflections on the ground completely #3, also, render times are not optimal, because Always Solid pass is slow and I have to render alpha separately.

How can I more closely approach Always Solid result in for compositing mode?  I notice alpha does not include reflections, maybe I need to check something? Should I include more passes ? which ones ?

Thanks a lot

[Max] I need help! / Brutal crash Corona 1.7 + threadripper
« on: 2017-10-28, 08:39:50 »
Hello, Just upgraded my system to threadripper 1950 and I'm getting some pretty brutal crashes that "lock" my computer. I've never had crashes like this before in any other scenario, I will try to describe.

Rendering in in interactive or normal render, after a few minutes the video source goes out.  Fans and case lights are still on though, but I get absolutely no video. Another strange thing is that my mouse's rgb logo goes black too.

After the crash, I can't turn the pc off by long pressing the power button. I have to cut power completely, plug again (fans spinning but still no video), long press power button to turn off and then turn on again normally, even the mouse turns on. This is the only way I found to recover from the brutal crash.

This happened 4 or 5 times, and I decided to downgrade to 1.6.3, no issue so far.

I would like to reproduce this issue but I fear hardware damage, I've never seen a computer crash like this.

The system is not overclocked at all. It's a fresh install only 3dsmax and corona, all the latest drivers.

[Max] I need help! / Disable Exposure Control
« on: 2017-08-10, 07:05:19 »
In my last project I create a physical camera like I always do, hit render and the image is very under exposed. However the VFB shows the exposure to be locked at -6.   I look around for a "6" somewhere and find that the "Exposure Gain>Target" setting in the Physical Camera is set to 6.

I can control the exposure with this setting, but I would prefer to control it inside the VFB, specially in early stages when I like to play around settings quickly.

I don't know how to go back to old behavior, I must've clicked something.  How can I go back to controlling exposure in VFB and not in Exposure Gain box?

[Max] General Discussion / Node minimum requirements
« on: 2017-03-29, 05:29:14 »

I can't find recommendations for node builds anywhere. I'm trying to keep it as cheap as possible with Ryzen 1700x and I'm wondering how a bare-bones node should look like?

I think I can save a lot in ram compared to my main system, but I'm unsure as I've  never worked with nodes.

Would something like this work? ... Ryzen 1700x, Cheapest Mobo, 120GB SSD, 8GB Ram, no graphics card?

My very limited understanding is that Corona won't benefit from a graphics card, but I don't know how ram hungry it is...  My main system has 64 GB of ram.
Also, if I'm using a Ryzen 1700x computer as my main system, having a node with the same processor essentially slashes render times in half? What about 4 system or 8? Is there a point where you start to get diminishing returns?

Thanks for your patience :)

[Max] General Discussion / Corona@home
« on: 2017-01-03, 02:00:11 »
Owning a computer does not make sense for a big percentage of people. Just like owning a car will soon stop to make sense.

It's like installing a coffee maker for each person in the office, there is a huge computational potential that's just wasted :(

There are a few programs like SETI@HOME, Folding@Home or GIMPS that harness idle computing power to calculate some extraordinary stuff...

Now, I've used renderfarm services and I know "distribuiting" a render is not easy, you need to send the whole scene...

But I'm wondering, is there some part of the render work that can be easily distributed among other corona users?

I'm not saying exactly what a renderfarm does, it's most definitely not practical.  I know enough to understand why this idea sounds stupid, but not enough to be sure is completely impossible.

MAYBE there is some number crunching that takes a lot of computational resources and could be shared? Maybe corona users can rent their idle machine in some way?

Is that even possible?

[Max] I need help! / Material Slot Quality
« on: 2016-10-25, 23:49:57 »
Sometimes people post screenshots of their material slots with great quality render, the default is only a few passes, how can I increase the number of passes/render time of the material slot.

I realize it's a stupid answer but I've been searching for hours. Hope my Corona license is not revoked for asking such a stupid question :)
