Title: New Cosmos browser
Post by: Stefan-L on 2022-02-03, 14:29:38
Dear Corona team,

LOVE the new Cosmos addition in the v8 daily - thanks for that!

a few questions i have:

- i cannot see correct material previews, the textures not show in the previews of the material sphere, they render correct though then in ipr and final render, so i have some wrong there or is this yet an known issue?

- atm it uses the web browser, this seem to conflict with the use in a dropbox folder, probably due the web browser use? (in vray with integrated cosmos browser it works) i can only import downloaded files when i pause the dropbox. i guess cosmos will also get an integrated cosmos window, right?

- some materials are very reflective or shiny in comparence to the cosmos originals. the same in vray seem yet at least to me a bit more realistic (like wood floors p.e), i compared for example this "Wood_Tiles_Shiny_04_200cm". do we need to lower the IOR ?

thanks!
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

This is from the changelog:

- Currently, we don't support "Use triplanar mapping", we plan to fix this in following daily builds
- We are still working on improving the look of imported materials (some materials might e.g. import as too glossy)
- On Windows, Cosmos currently always open in external web browser (on macOS this can be configured at the top of Corona preferences)

thanks i read that yes,
but it seems no triplaner involved, like the material from a tree created is 100% transparent in materialsphere,  or the trunk shows plain brown, even thogh there is a bitmap in diffuse etc (also no triplanar), etc

When I click on cosmos browser, Firefox opens. But then I get an error message in Firefox. It can't reach to the server.
Do I need some additional steps to get it working?

C4D R20
Win 10
Firefox up to date

But it looks very promising :)

Just had this myself :) I can now pretend to be clever and share what Benji in support told me which resolved it for me:

-Install the latest Cosmos version (I've downloaded it from chaos website, https://download.chaosgroup.com/?platform=47&product=62 )
-Close the Cosmos tab in the web browser
-Close C4D
-Run the "Start Chaos Cosmos Browser" app (from your Windows start menu)
-Re-open C4D and launch Cosmos

Thanks for the detailed instruction to get the browser running. The selection of objects is great!

An observation:
Load a Cosmos object and import it. The proxy is scaled to "10" in X, Y and Z, but this gives it the proper and expected size.
Now "Dupilcate to Mesh". The created mesh is scales to "1" in X, Y and Z, but this also means that humans, for example, are less than 20 cm tall (great if you plan to shoot the next hobbit movie).

Btw, a scale other than 1,1,1 is undesired in C4D in general, at least for objects in their original state.

PS
Would it be possible to store the downloaded objects under their name (and import them in the scene under this name as well)?
So the "Bus 005" gets saved under that name and also appears under this name in the scene, so we don't end up with several dozens of objects named "Corona Proxy"?

+1 just wanted to ask same:)

i think i found a small bug yet:
some cosmos objects import with empty material tags, i think this happens when a material is applied more than one time in original cosmos file.

you see this for example on the tree called "Rowan 002".
when i import it via v-ray it has 5 material tags with 3 unique materials applied tot he 5 tags.
in corona it has also 5 material tags but 2 of these material tags are empty(showing a "?"), - i assume the ones that needed one material applied 2x tot he object:

for the materials that show no preview, as reported above,
i found that this is connected to the overwrite UVW option and the channel 1 which is set there,
if i set it to channel 0 it shows the preview ok, (but then renders wrong), so seems the preview has yet issues with the UVW channel option:

i had some crashes  at render time with cosmos objects, i think when i copied them from one scene to another. i have seen the material tab was empty for some reason. when i removed them from scene it did render ok again.

if i can recreate that case i post it here

So what exactly is Cosmos? Is it just an in-app TurboSquid type of thing? A browser that you can purchase models already set up with Corona materials?
Title: Re: New Cosmos browser
Post by: TomG on 2022-02-04, 20:14:41
A browser that you can purchase download at no extra charge models models, materials, HDRI skies, and in the future other things, already set up compatible with Corona materials?

Exactly!

OK, so now I get the Cosmos thing. I hadn't signed in with my Corona login. I was confused since the browser would just take you to their sign in page, but it doesn't say anything. Very nice benefit indeed.

for me cosmos is quite a game changer and it gets more and more, most of the things are really useful.
that is starts to be available now in Corona makes me VERY happy:)

can you please tell us the name of the import(s)?

If not mistaken, I believe it's this one: ''Flower Meadow 006''. Also confirming this issue.

yes it is flower meadow 006,
but it is not limited to this one, i have this in like 25-30% of the assets i downloaded so far (mostly plants),

pls see also my other post on the empty material assignments, this is a separate problem on some assets yet (also here mostly on plants)

I had overlooked this thread, and made a new one describing exactly this issue, and the fact that cloners only "see" object scale=1, so when cloning Cosmos proxys, everything is 10x too small
(link to my thread: https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=35602.0 (https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=35602.0)

A separate issue, which I thought could be a workaround, is when making Cosmos proxys editable they seem to lose the correct material assigments (there are no polygon selections...  is that as expected?

Any update from the devs on the 10x scale issue in the Cosmos library?...  this is pretty crucial to me, and currently an issue which make it mostly unusable for me at the moment.

Hello,

we are working on this and will try to get an update to this soon.

Thanks,

With the latest daily (Feb16) there has been some great improvements, but looks like the 10x scale issue was sadly not resolved (hopefully in next daily?)...
It is great that the proxys are now named uniquely - thanks!
triplnar mapping supposedly works - can you point to an asset where we can confirm this? (I'm unsure about which are using it)
I still see many objects with missing material tag assignments (with the "?" instead) - this is hopefully a priority?  I've tried "fixing" some, but have no idea which material tags are what, as there apparently are not polygon selections associated with them.
I understand the desire from Chaos to keep the Cosmos assets proprietary (i.e. that they won't be usable if they're made editable)...  but can someone please confirm that this is the expected behavior?...  so we won't be able to edit any of the image files (e.g. .tx files) used in any textures either?
Title: Re: New Cosmos browser

Not being able to using a converted object with textures is a bit of a letdown.
If the texture assigment finally works, I can live with that, though.

I presume people know they have to launch the server, a licence server before they use the cosmos browser.
That's the way it works in Vray.

Yes, we are close to fixing this on our end.

Material section of Cosmos Browser (not objects, material imports)

Yes, a priority, we should have a fix for that in a daily build coming soon.

If this is concerning the ability to use editable meshes with mapped materials, we are working on allowing that as well!

Thanks for your feedback,
Jan

for me that works, where you have an issue with that?

So what happens if I lose internet for a while. Can I even run Corona or Cosmos if it can't call home? That could be a problem.

dear all,
i tried the latest v8 beta, i see the problem with missing materials in cosmos seem still be there.
i tried 2english oak 0032 this time

2 of 4 assigned materials are empty and rendering white

hope this info helps, and you can fix that soon, it affects many assets yet which makes most uses of cosmos limited yet

Already fixed, to show up in the next build. BTW I tested English Oak 003, as there isn't a 0032 :)

The scale issues and the plant material issues are fixed now, thx for that.

People are no longer too glossy, but setting the glossiness to 0% is not the best solution. Usually these people models come with glossiness masks, so that skin, clothing and accessories can have different glossiness values. Will this come?

i have a problem loading cosmos browser. it shows blank (white) in c4d > see attachement
it also happens in c4d r25. corona 8, newest daily build (rc3), is installed.
no error messages while installation, nor in c4d.

does anybody have the same issue? maybe i am missing something...!?
ps: license is activated and loaded

I can't seem to access the cosmos browser. I get the following message. (see image attached) I tried it in one of the Daily builds and it took me through to the website fine before.

Tried the trick TOm mentioned in an earlier post and its now working all ok. :)
