This is to be expected - unfortunately the only alternative would be having to hand-tweak the MSI parameter based on scene exposure :/
Rendering is magic. How to get minidumps for crashed/frozen 3ds Max | Sorry for short replies, brief responses = more time to develop Corona ;)

Having 2 independent exposure settings would solve the problem:
1. Initial lockable render exposure. User sets it as a starting point, locks and forgets about this setting unless significant change in scene lighting arrangement is needed. This setting should be used for MSI calculations.
2. Post-production exposure in VFB.

That would have been a perfect, elegant and simple solution:
- without having an increased render time overhead due to tweaking MSI
- without making user remember initial exposure and resetting it each and every time before restarting/starting new render.

I understand all this easy setting philosophy, but this tiny increase in Corona's settings complexity, would turn into a huge leap in render predictability.
And I believe it's very easy in terms of implementation. Adding one GUI option and changing variable name in few places in code in some MSI calculations. A tiny bit of work for you, a great improvement for all, who use Corona for interior visualization.
