is there some issue with using the AO map in the mask slot of the layered material? i want to overlay another map but use the AO to just affect the edges of the object but so far nothing, not sure if its a bug

It should work just fine. Could you show material setup screen?

Keep in mind that in LayeredMTL, white defines contribution of material layer, not black. So often times, AO map has to be inverted (best done using output node) before it goes into the material mask slot.
