We have a very big terrain 8km * 6km, it was all working smoothly until we started to use corona distance as a mask for a corona layer material applied to the terrain, now every vertex movement is as slow as it gets. It would be a big time saver if the corona distance just be computed at render time .

We are using corona 11.2 max 24.2.1  Win 10

You might be out of luck on that one, I've requested this for a long time and afaik it was worked on but it's still not ideal.
One thing to try is to close the material editor or not having it being displayed in a material preview.
That will help a bit.
Other than that, +1 here, it's definitely needed!

3DS Max Shell Material might be a good workaround for this, as you can force a simplified material for the viewport and the complex one for render.

The bigger part of the problem is the object(s) used in the distance map list (not the object the material is assigned to) - even if you replace the material with something that uses the map at render time only, any transform operation of an object used as distance object will trigger the map and update constantly. So closing the material editor helps but somehow the distance map still updates in the background.
