Hardware / Hardware/RAID question.
« on: 2023-11-16, 23:05:33 »
Not sure this is the right place to ask, but I know 3d guys always know their tech!

I have a server in the studio which has 4 x 8Tb M.2 drives ($$$) in RAID10. I think. So that gives me 8Tb of fast and safe.
However, we back up everything to Dropbox. To expand my server, I want to disbale the RAID and use the drives individually.
Is this possible without wiping the drives? Is it difficult/delicate operation? Ive not done much with RAID. Just set it and forget it...
TIA,
Tom.

I specified 30 passes. It took an hour and 5 mins or so. I didnt see the final noise reported (on farm). Looks pretty high though!

[Max] General Discussion / Noise in spherical renderings.
« on: 2022-09-28, 16:30:52 »
I have alot of grain in some spherical office renderings. Rendering at 10k x 5k. I can see in the elements that the grain is coming from ceiling lights. The lights are just regular corona plane lights and corona disk lights. The are set to NOT affect anything other than casting light. They are invisible.
The visible lights are LightMaterial in a separate element, no noise there.
The disk lights and plane lights are on separate elements. Noise in both channels.
I have a spherical image (8bit) as a background, no noise there. Just noise in the elements with corona lights.
Ive tried disabling displacement.
Ive reduced some diffuse values in response to Albedo having red in the pass. There's a couple of minor infractions left, but I saw no reduction in grain.
I am rendering for 1 hr using a 3990 (128 cores) and a DR node (5975). Should easy be clean, right?
Ive posted a reduced size render and a crop at 1/1. Its pretty bad.

Any help much appreciated!
Tom.

[Max] General Discussion / Render farm for Anima people.
« on: 2022-05-27, 19:05:37 »
Hello all,
We are having problems with Anima people not rendering on Rebus Farm. We sent a test file with a single person and it rendered fine. We sent the complete scene with a bunch of people and it comes back with missing actors. Their support have been responsive but unable to help.

So, firstly, anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas on a fix? Our scene totals 10gig, so uploading actual file to run multiple cameras requires multiple uploads and is killing our schedule.

Secondly, can anyone recommend another farm that supports the latest Anima plugin and content?

Thanks,
Tom.

[Max] Resolved Bugs / Re: Scene stops to render
« on: 2021-09-03, 00:57:09 »
Me again, I thought we had resolved this problem, we have not. We cant pin down what is causing the render issues. We remove things from the file, problem sometimes goes, sometimes changes. I think it is memory related, although when it crashes on launch we dont see a memory spike. Just an 'end process' in Backburner Log. The memory spike to crahs issue is strange, the CPU usage drops to 2%, the RAM usage takes about 5 mins to max out then CTD.

I have just been trouble shooting a scene with a similar problem.
I eventually narrowed it to the scatters. I had multiple proxies (plants, grass, bushes, palms etc) being scattered in multiple coronascatters. Two of them seemed to crash the scene in one camera. Only those two had proxies that were scaled before being scattered. Un-proxy and Reset XForm on those objects and it seems to be stable.... This took two people two days to troubleshoot. Hope it helps.

Ah. Thought Id fixed it, I havent. Same problem. Goes to about 35 mins using 35% of 128gig of RAM then memory usage spikes to close to 100%, stops making progress in render, eventually crashes.
and yes, I have Teamviewer installed which is used periodically. Just tried rendering with Teamviewer shut down, no difference.
ok, you can ignore my participation here, we had a bad model downloaded from a stock site.

We did a few images in the studio to represent the idea of leaving work for a while during Covid. This is one, we have a whole bunch of new work up on the Behance page from the last year or so. Is it just me that cant find the time to update a company website, so all the good stuff ends up hidden on Behance...?

Hi,
I have the same problem out lined here. I have found a couple of threads about this frame time increasing problem but they offer no solutions. Has anyone resolved this problem of the parsing time increasing every frame?

11
Hi, did the problem here get resolved? I have the same increasing frame time problem.
thanks in advance,
Tom.

Bump.
Has no-one else had this issue? Its happened on the last 3 projects I rendered frame sequences for, really need to find a working solution...
Thanks,
Tom.

I am rendering 4k on a Ryzen 3990. ~1500 frames (10 cameras).
1 HDRI is the only light source, lots of proxies.
Very small camera movement only, no animation, the content is essentially the same on each frame.
Im using a noise tolerance (7%) and denoising (90).

I see a few seconds added to each frame time. Not the first time this has happened, but this project will go to a commercial farm (Rebus) and I dont want to burn my credit unnecessarily. If I suspend the render then restart it on Backburner, the frame time drops to the original frame time and begins its creep up again, frame by frame. After 35 frames it is +50% over frame 2.
Ive added some images below to describe the problem.
Any help much appreciated.

Then you should definitely give it a try. You can do many things with Corona distance map. Here you can find the description and few examples: https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/12000017221-corona-distance-map

oooooooh, thats super-nice! Every day's a school day! Thanks again.

Thanks for the advice! I just used a regular shader in the end instead of the light shader, exposure worked out ok anyway. The mountains are just mapped onto a topless/bottomless cylinder, so not heavy. Im not familiar with the distance node, you mean like a gradient ramp set to distance z from camera?
