Hi guys,

I'm thinking about buying an old i5 (LGA 1156) because of its price, but firstly, I would like to know your opinion.

I currently use an i7 (1156 as well) at my work, with a Gigabyte mother board and 16gb ram (4xDDR3), and the speed is ok! But for me, at home, the computer I'll buy will have almost the same configuration, but with an i5 instead.

Will this cause a significant decrease in rendering speed?

Thanks in advance,
thecaveman

Check whether this model has hyper-threading. Current intel policy is to ship i5s without, but it was different back when that series was started. Unless the price is really good, the 20% penalty hit from not having that is painful.
If you know the model try to find it also in the Corona Benchmark table https://corona-renderer.com/benchmark/?cpu-type=i5&submit=Search and compare it to your i7's benchmark result. That will give you an idea of how much exactly you lose and wether it is worth the price you pay.
