Good effort. You may want to try to add gradient ramp to decal material's opacity or displacement channel to smooth out transition between knurled and smooth parts, it's kinda harsh now.

Thanks for that tip Romullus. That sounds like a great idea. I have actually used 3 decals on the bottle: 1) a clear glass decal to create an area slightly larger than the label which removes the displacement effect in and around the label, 2) a decal for the background (black) material and 3) a decal for the decal graphics. So I am assuming what you are suggesting is that I would add the gradient ramp to the 1st decal (the glass material which is removing the displacement of the bottle). I will give that a try.

You can do all that without decals by combining several materials, or maps and use several mapping channels to control placement of different elements. It might not be as convenient to use as decals, but on the other hand it's much easier to export such asset to different applications.

I would love to see how that could be done, however, I am still relatively new to Corona. Can you recommend a tutorial that shows how I could do all that, or tell me which mapping channels you would use to achieve this effect?

Note that you can even use Curved decals with Corona 12 Daily builds, which should be the real use case for you I believe.

Remember to back up your scenes though when opening them with experimental/daily builds.

Thanks for letting me know. I think that will be a good addition. However, I will wait until it is officially released with Corona 12 (non-experimental)

I was able to apply the gold graphic to the bottle using a Corona decal, but am having difficulty getting the white background square behind it. My plan was to use another Corona decal for the background, hoping to remove the displacement effect through the decal properties. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to make that work. Is there a way to do this with corona decals, or is there a another, easier way to do this? I thought this would be a relatively simple thing to do, but all of my efforts have not brought about the intended results. Any help would be appreciated.

If i understand correctly what you want, this should be possible to do with decals. Make sure second decal (the one with white square) has displacement enabled and add to base disabled. That way its displacement will override bottle's displacement and you should have knurling free area where you want.

Like always there are other methods to achieve what you want that does not require usage of decals, but if decals are working for you, i see no reason not to use them.

Thanks Romullus. That helped. Also, I found it it is important to place the decal objects in the right order! The reason I wanted to use Corona Decals is that it provides a very easy and fast way to change out the label or to make changes to the color of the label (and in this case, the background label). I decided to use a black, or no background, instead of the white as I think it shows off the logo and text better. I have attached some images to show this versatility.

But I am curious as to what other methods you would recommend.

Hello. I am trying to create a bottle label consisting of a gold graphic element on a square white background. The bottle itself has a displacement texture that I'd like to exclude from the label area. I have included a screen shot so you can see what I am trying to do.

Hey, did you find the solution? The solution listed above should help you but if you are still having issues, please let me know.

Yes, changing the image filter did the trick. Thanks.

I was able to find out why it was not working. In the corona bitmap settings, it seems that the Mono Channel Output needs to be set to Alpha. Not sure why this helped, but once I switched it from RGB Intensity, it worked.

I was finally able to figure out this one. The suggestion to combine (aka: attach) all the keys was the big help I needed. As well, when creating the Normal map, I had to turn on Top/Bottom Mapping. That gave me the map of the entire keyboard which I could then bring into photoshop to paint the keys as I needed. Thanks to Avi for the assistance. :)

Can anyone tell me why this decal is not displaying correctly? As far as I know, everything is correct and it should display, so I am not sure what I am missing.

24
combine all keys, select the top face, apply a unwrap and do a normal mapping, give each face a seperate ID then either use Corona multimap or multi sub object to apply different textures and materials to every key.

What do you mean when you say "combine all keys"?

OR

Take the unwrap to photoshop and manually paint or put numbers in 1 single texture and use that single texture in 1 materials and be done with it.

Yes, I think this would be my preferred method, but haven't figure out how to get just one map. When I use UVW unwrap, it gives me a separate map for each key.

OR

you should be able to use decals also, it should not be that big of a issue. you can also use align tool to align decals to key centers.

How can this be done? Would I need to have one decal for each key? I tried using one decal to cover all the keys, but it was impossible to get every number/letter and icon to align properly on the individual respective keys.

Are you sure DOF is not on?

Yes, I am positive.

Hello everyone. I am hoping there is someone here who can help me. I am trying to find the best way to add numbers and icons to the keys of this keyboard. I have tried to use Corona decals material but found it very difficult to line up all the characters for the keys so that they would be centered properly on their respective keys. Any suggestions on how to do this? I am using 3ds Max.

Thanks.

Not heard of this before, we'd need info, at very least Max version and Corona version, but also is this every scene or a particular one? Any recent updates to Max, Corona, or Windows? Also useful would be a scene file where this happens to you, which can be sent privately via ticket at https://support.chaos.com/requests/new (include a link to this forum post so we can connect the dots, ty!)

Thanks for replying TomG. The folks at support were able to find a resolution. It turns out I had a region in the VFB. In case someone else might encounter this, here is how to resolve it: Open the VFB. At he top of the window click on Region and select Disable all. That resolved this for me. Thanks to Arpit at the Chaos support team for this solution. :)

Render settings > Image Filter > Type: Tent > Width [px]: 1,2 value

cheers

Thank you. Mine was set to High Quality instead of Tent. Changing it did seem to make a difference. :)

It took me a while to find this, but in case others have this same issue the Image filter can be found in the System tab of the Render Setup window.

[Max] I need help! / [solved] IR freezing
« on: 2024-03-21, 00:28:11 »
In my render setup, I have the perspective viewport selected and locked. However, I notice that the Corona IR does not update to reflect the view I have in 3ds Max - in fact it is completely frozen! I have tried shutting down 3ds Max and restarting, but the problem is not resolved. This has not happened before and I have not changed anything since it last worked!. I noticed that the IR does work if I start the IR in an active viewport, but if I start it in the VFB, it no longer works. Sometimes the IR in the VFB just shows black and no objects are displayed. If I just open the VFB, it also just appears black. What is going on?

It appears to me that the render in your screenshot is zoomed in beyond 1:1. Make sure that you're always looking at your picture at 100% zoom when you want to evaluate its sharpness.

Here is a screenshot at 1:1. it still appears blurry to me.
