Well, it had to be done ;) I remade my old grapes render with SSS.
It was a lot more trickier than expected, I wasn't able to just turn on SSS and that's it - I had to completely redo the shader. There are also some weird artifacts from the unfinished SSS implementation but fortunately it's not too obvious if you don't know where to look at :D
old version: https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php/topic,103.0.html

Attached are the raw render and the post-worked image. I'm not happy with the composition, the eye doesn't really find a spot to rest, but it'd be too difficult to change the whole scene right now. Anyways, that's it, hope you like it nonetheless

Finally, someone showed practical usage of this new toy! I was getting to worry about it :]
Great scene. Not sure if i like your previous version more, though.

That's perfectly fine ;) I like some things in the old version and some stuff in the new one, but none of them is great from a composition point of view.

I attached a crop of the upper left region, you can see some weird brightly shaded faces here. Afaik it's due to too much refraction glossiness. If I go below 0.5 It really gets weird and it's visible everywhere. If this is still the case after everything is implemented I will, of course, log it as a bug, but I don't know if it makes sense right now.

Isn't it shadow terminator problem? To me it looks so.

It's not behaving this way without SSS, so it's certainly linked to it. Plus, it looks more like a falloff or halo if glossiness is lower than what I did. I'm scratching on a threshold here ;)

See the image attached below:
- upper left mat is without glossiness,
- line below, from left to right: glossiness: 0.5 - glossiness 0.3 - glossiness 0.2

[Edit]
Oh, wait... It actually behaves that way even without absorption or SSS... mhhhhh
Logging it as a bug, just to be sure.

Sorry for offtopic, but is this all sss controls available? Looks a bit empty. Can't imagine how i'd try to replicate human skin with it. I'm used to mental ray's complexity :]

What you see here is the unfinished UI, no worries. And you are using a lot more than just the Scattering color and directionality. You can (and must) combine it with translucency and/or refraction and absorption or opacity etc. It sounds a bit complicated (and it is at first) but I guess this will change when everything's implemented.
In this case it is Translucency + Gloss. Refraction + Absorption + SSS  ;)

I really hope there will not be any more controls that this. Just SSS mode checkbox should go away, so there should actually be less. I actually like this SSS a lot as it's not being a complete hell to set up. That being said, SSS in CoronaMTL is just for basic SSS effects, like fruits, food, marble, juice, milk, honey and so on.

For complex skin, i would think there will be dedicated shader exactly like MR or Vray have.

But even with this simple SSS mode, i've been actually able to create some reasonably looking skin: https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php/topic,4756.msg32363.html#msg32363

It would look even more realistic if i had proper glossiness map :)
