I have an animation we are going to render, the client is not sure if they want people in the shot.  Is there a way to render the animation, then later render just the people for in that animation but still get there reflections and shadows on the surrounding objects? Sounds like something shadow catcher is for, but not sure how to get there exact reflections on the objects in the scene with certain reflective surfaces, or people behind refractive surfaces?

Hi,

here is a short video tutorial on how you can add people later in the shot though it's just a general idea, depending on how your scene is setup you might need to do more or less steps.

It's mostly about compositing, video compositing software's such as after effects, nuke or fusion should help you do it.

I would also recommend to watch our helpdesk tutorial on how to use Render element passes, which you can use to composite reflection, refraction & shadows accordingly.

I hope this helps.

Hi Avi,

Thank you for the response and info, really appreciate it. I already do what you have shown, I can render out just the people by using Render selected>Viewport selection.  You can see that when you did that you lost the drop shadows from the character, you retained the reflection for just the floor because you rendered out the floor.  But my question is can you get all drop shadows and reflections from just the character for the scene.  So you would just choose an objects and not only would it render the object itself but all reflections, refractions, lighting, shadows.  that would make it easier for comping in later. The AOV seem to cover all reflections and refractions, not just for a specific object.

You can use render selected, but you have to select every object that will have changed (that is will have shadows falling on it now, will have a different reflection in it now, etc.). Otherwise the render engine has no idea what reflections may be different and need re-rendering and which will not have changed.

Hi,

Thank you for prompt reply. Yes, Tom is correct that I also mentioned, depending on how your scene is setup. you might need to add more or less objects in the selection & render them only. In my case, If I need the drop shadow also. I can do it in 3 ways. Either just render only the back wall, floor and the character. Or I can use shadow catcher mtl to catch only the shadow of character and I would make the planter in the back as Non-renderable object so I don't get it shadow. Third way could be. If I select the character > object properties > turn off visibility to camera > Then only render floor & wall. Then I would get only the shadow & reflection which I can composite using the alpha.

So, it totally depend on what would be the fastest way to do this thing in your scene which you are setting up. It could be as easy as my small scene or could be more complex. :)
