Use object paint!

Another way....

Sometimes i just drop objects (People, cars, trees, chairs)in my scene without caring for the Z value, I just place them along the X,Y. Once im happy with their location I drop them with this script

I use ObjectDropper, remember to always move your gizmo to the bottom of your model.

It also has some other scripts that can come in handy.

That's true...but the real question is finding the real ones. I hate it when i watch youtube tuts, and it misguides you.
