Hey everyon, we recently updated the long used ImageCompHelper script from Christoph Bülter to include a bit more functionality.

Here's the page for the original script to give you a basic overview of what it does.
http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/imagecomphelper

The major additions we've made are:
  • Golden spiral now works in Portrait mode too, can be unlocked, zoomed and moved around.
  • Toggle button to quickly switch between portrait and landscape.
  • There are drop downs for different common aspect ratios.

Hope it's useful for you all!

[EDIT]: After installing and you want to find it in 3ds Max, it is under TheFactionCGI category.

Had a couple days of downtime this week, so this got thrown together. We do quite a lot of chalet projects in the winter so the goal was to work on merging different displacement maps for the snow as well as stream lining our workflow for adding "fresh" snow to objects like the roof and various trees.

Hey everyone, we just wrapped up this project a few weeks ago, definitely one of the most bonkers properties we've ever worked on. But, as a result we were able to find a lot of interesting shots outside of the usual "whole room" angles.

There's a lot of images from this project, I've put a dozen or so here you can find the rest of the website. https://thefactioncgi.com/chalet-tataali

Hey everyone, this is another chalet project we did over the winter. The snow material is a culmination of about 6 weeks of tweaking and tinkering. We couldn't get any good site photography, so we build the whole landscape in 3d. We're pretty happy with how it all turned out.

Hey everyone, just in time for summer :P this is a project we worked on earlier in the year. It was our first foray back into chalets for about a year which had it's own challenges, as well as working with a new client. In the end we were pretty happy with how it turned out.

I just encountered some strange crashing behavior when trying to Store the VFB after resetting the render settings in the attached file.

In it's current state, the file works just fine, you can Store the VFB without issue. But if you reset the render settings and try to Store the VFB after doing an IR it hangs and crashes max.

I've tried resetting render settings, clearing out the elements, turning the caustics and adaptive light solver on/off, and the crash still happens every time with reset settings.

What's bizarre is that if I open Max without any start file, so it's totally default and switch my render to Corona, the same crashing behavior occurs...

Has anyone else encountered this?

Hardware / For the overclockers out there
« on: 2019-06-11, 10:47:35 »
Hey everyone, I was wondering for those of you running overclocks on your CPUs and RAM what sort of stress testing you guys do to make sure it's 100% solid.

I've OC'd a couple of Ryzens and Intels now for use in the office/rendering, and even with hours and hours of stability in AIDA64 or Prime 95, I routinely would get a crash here or there when rendering scenes in Corona. What's even more annoying is that these crashes can come after 10+ hours of rendering or even like the 3rd or 4th render. From there it's pretty just adjust the voltages until I stop getting the crashes and I'm officially stable.

It'd be handy to find a stresstest that can produce these instabilities before I fire up corona though. Any ideas?

Hey everyone, this is a portfolio piece I worked on last year. I go to this area of Malmo every time I visit, it's such a cool little neighborhood and it seems to be ever expanding. Originally started this project from a photo I took, so it was a lot of fun trying to guess/figure out all the dimensions as the project evolved.

Hey guys, this is a private house we worked on at the end of last year. The landscape is kinda imaginary, we were given some freedoms there as well as some guidelines (had to situated on the lake, etc).

Hey guys, we've been pretty slack about showing the work we've completed since we last posted. So I'm going to aim to get more of it up here. Starting off with one of our best images (I think) from last year. This is AR Design Studio's "Black House", it's won a bunch of design awards which we can't take any credit for because the house was already built and finished before we did this image. We just wanted to wow them and show them what we could deliver for them should they be looking at CGI studios in the future.

Hey guys, I thought I’d show off this Villa project we just finished. We had a lot of free reign over furnishing and interior design on this, which can be a blessing and a curse, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

Corona Sun+Sky did all the heavy lifting on this.

Subject Line pretty much says it all, when I use a .HDR HDRI in the override slots I get a ton of noise as seen in the image below. Compared to just making an 8-Bit JPG out of the same file and using that. Additionally it takes about 4x longer to render if I use the .HDR file.

I've tested this with a couple .HDR files. Anyone encountering this?

[Max] General Discussion / April Fools gone wrong?
« on: 2018-04-01, 05:23:19 »
I'm guessing the switch to comic sans is an April Fool's joke, but it looks like the formatting has broken since the VFB has added new features:

I don't suppose there's any way to turn it off?

Just noticed this today, we setup the output files to be 16-bit TIFFs and while all the render elements came out as 16-bit, the light mix and light select elements were only 8-bit.

Hey guys, I thought I’d show off this landscape view we did for a recent project.
