You're a great developer, thank you!

Sweet! But it seems rotating the lights does not seem to give correct results.

Looks like trading your soul with devil for programming skills really pays off + you get a bunch of followers.

it's small bag, I think in the next release it will not :)

I wish I wouldn't have sold it already to Autodesk years ago... a really bad deal when I see what keymaster got :D

it's small bag, I think in the next release it will not :)
That's for sure :)

It is a bug... !
Why such strong gradient transition? I tried pieces of 20 different ies-files, all have this a problem...

Can you send me an example IES file (better yet, with scene), all mine seems to work

Hi,

i tried the last build, still dont work the ies for me when i rotate de light 180º, here i attach some image examples.

1º the same light with same ies rotated 180º.
2º the same light deactivating ies.

Cheers,

works for me, probably still old build, I've dropped another ones

Well, while I was rendering a test image with IES lights, suddenly max shut down. It was after 2 o 3 hours of testing and I didn't change anything in particular to cause an error. I can't know which error cause the shut down. Opening an autoback I got huge IES web in viewport: I had 2 standard corona rectangular lights with no IES and opening the autoback the IES file was added to this lights.

While choosing IES file I get weird results like a totally white render, even at super low multiplier. I know these file are right because with other render engine they render normally.

I also noticed that get clean reflective material is really really difficult with CoronaLights. I let render a region to a quite high render pass to see if I can get out of noise, but even at pass 1725 after 6,5 minutes it's not clean, with some rough math it means that to render a 1280x720 I have to wait for about 2,38 hours, and for an image twice bigger about 9,5 hours. Render settings are almost the default, PT+PT 4 samples and lights samples multiplier at 10, last build.

I think the picture understandable I'm talking about ... :)

And still, why the shadow from a chair leg when the shadow from all the rest behaves on another so strange looks?

It was my first try: better but extremely long render times. 9 hrs [estimated] for clean reflections in a 2k render, there's something to investigate. Don't know if it's a IES light or Corona issue.

I didn't noticed at first sight, but what ecximer said is true and abnormal

Well. With a leg of a chair dealt - so has to be.
And here concerning shadows the question remains open.

One scene have only point lights (sharp shadows) and one only area lights (soft shadows)
..the one leg looks like a bug, but if look carefully you can see that it's shadow is blured too. Maybe it's the angle of the light to the leg(?)

anyway.. good to see that ies lights coming to corona... maybe someone can test some linear lights?

From a chair I already dealt with a pinch, VRay in the same way calculates everything and logically it and shall be. I in vain a panic lifted it :)
But with the spread caustic from light IES something not so, can do everything so, but result not what waited more precisely. :(

I wouldn't bet that vray is doing everything right with IES files... test your scene with iray and you will get at least proper light distribution with area lights!

Are photometric web lights allowed to be used in Corona?

I've set the shadows type to corona but no light emits for the IES file. Reason I say this is because most of my libraries light has this type and I have a script (IES viewer) which allows me to click on a toolbar icon an view the IES file and swap it out. It's super handy. See a video here. First 3mins show how to install. See the other on how it's used.

Thanks in advance if this can be done.

I think that photometric lights only work as with "point" shape. Are you using point shape?
Title: Re: IES lights added
Post by: 3dwannab on 2015-01-12, 15:59:16
Thanks, it works (Sort of) It gives unexpected results.. I think this is due to light only allowed to be emitted from a point and not a shape. I've done two test scenes. Both with 8700 Lumens in the light source. Only difference is the Corona IES light is 1cm disk as the shape.

The darker of the two images is the photometric IES file.. the Coroan IES is how it should appear.

Isn't this light blocked by something (glass) or facing in the wrong direction?

Update: I checked and it works strange for me too. Photometric light is much darker. I guess you are right that it's because Corona light has some radius (it gets brighter as it gets bigger) and point light is just a point. It could take "area radius" from Corona shadows parameters into account but it would be a bit awkward to set light's intensity by changing shadow settings. :)

Will this be fixed at all in the 1st release to allow those shapes in the photometric lights?

I tend to avoid mixing max lights and corona lights in a scene. I've found that max photometric lights tend to get sampled way more than the corona lights which leads to excessively long render times in order to clear up directional / ies corona light noise.

Most likely but I like the functionality of the IES script to hotswap out the lights. I might contact the dev and ask if he could do something.
