Hey Tom, i wonder if you intentionally showed caustics on/off with post tab visible in VFB instead of stats tab? Does caustics has big impact on performance?

There will be an impact on performance, in that calculating caustics always involves more calculating than not calculating caustics :) So adding them into a scene will have some impact, there is more work to do so it will take longer to do it - caustics will never be "free" in terms of cost. We can't say how much impact as yet though, as one thing about development builds is that they run slower than production builds, and on top of that the code itself is still being refined as well, so it doesn't make sense yet to measure performance until things are further along.

Sure thing, i don't expect free lunch (although i wouldn't mind to have such :] ). I'm just curious what kind of impact that will be? The one, where you basically can leave caustics on in every scene, or the one, where you turn them on, only when you really really need them :]

I would guess it will always be the latter, use them only when you need them, as they are always computation heavy even when coded super well :)

Are there any plans to somehow have a caustics render element? It would be highly beneficial to be able to push these through into their own element and have the main beauty pass not have any, if the artist wishes, to avoid having to render twice.

This seems like a good idea!

I'm interested how you might benefit from this? (Honest question, genuinely interested!).
