I wanted to do this as a quick & fun weekend project, but it turned out it would explode the complexity of parts of our code, so now we are focusing on other areas, such as memory usage

Does that mean we won't see any new preserve options in v2?

It is not entirely ruled out, but I would not count on it. Maybe "preserve light materials" and "preserve glass materials" would be easily doable
