[Max] I need help! / CoronaVolumeMtl animated noise?
« on: 2015-09-22, 15:33:06 »
Hi everyone,

First of all thank you for taking the time to read this, and even more so if you spend any time thinking of a solution!

So, volume light and scatter in Corona is easy enough, few clicks gives you very decent results, however!  I don't know if any of you remember the good old scanline max standard way of doing it, but you had the option to animate a noise, size of your choosing to break up the volume light and simulate dust and other particles.

How would you go about doing this in Corona? using Corona volumemtl? (or standard corona mtl for that matter).

Cheers

A fairly quick scene setup using evermotion and 3dsky models.

The main goal was to test the corona volume material for the sunlight coming through the window.

Simple color mapping, tone mapping and a little bloom added using ArionFX for PS.

Any comments and general ideas are welcome. There hasn't been much thought into interior design, though this is also because I'm probably not the best at it, so feel free to give suggestions. I left out blinds / curtains on purpose for the sake of the test, but I understand that there probably should be something, or at least a hint of something.

Thanks!

As topic says.

I see more and more really great images, and the comments on them are nice, but always has some, what if you did this, and it would be nicer if you did this etc.
People comments and opinions are always great... BUT! I'm pretty sure everyone here who works in arch viz for living knows that often, you just simply have to do what the clients wants.

I think it would add a lot more value to the images and the gallery if you know what to expect.  There is often a huuuge difference in time spend, testing etc between commercial images and personal projects, and it would, hopefully, give more productive and constructive feedback too.

Please be aware I'm not trying to start a fight of which is better, purely want to state that I think they are just as, if not more, different as the WIP and the Gallery section is.

Just my thoughts! as I would love to be able to browse through images I know for a fact, are commercial images...

Hi everyone,

I am just playing around, and trying to light an interior scene using only corona sky in the environment corona setting. it all works from a lighting point of view, but I find it REALLY hard to get rid of the intense amount of noise in the direct light pass.. like crazy amount of noise.

Not much seems to change between pass 100 and 250. I have tried change the light samples from 2 to 8... but so far im not sure it makes any real difference.
Does Corona sky just generate a lot of noise naturally? or does it need like 3500 passes instead? (seems wrong).

anyway I am using the new 1.1 build released yesterday or so.

I may be missing  something here but if anyone has any ideas please do tell.

Cheers!

[Max] Resolved Bugs / Area specific "extra" sampling
« on: 2015-01-29, 13:20:54 »
New Maxwell Render feature that would be awesome in Corona.

"Extra Sampling
Often when you render an image, residual noise is concentrated in certain areas of the scene due their particular lighting and material characteristics. With the new Extra Sampling feature, you can now define a specific area of your image to be rendered to a higher sampling level than the rest – putting all the render power to the areas where it is most needed, rendering smarter and saving a huge amount of time."

Submitting Corona jobs to the network through Deadline (pre 1.0 daily build) currently does not work if you add render elements (specially the essential elements)

We asked the guys at Deadline and they gave us this back.

A section of the question from us to Deadline:
"Re: corona Render channels fails on SMTD script
Unread postby Bobo » Wed Dec 10, 2014 3:16 am

xxxxxxxx wrote:
please add more corona support as a renderer

oh, and this worked on last stable release. so pre release daily build has sent things off track"

From Deadline:
"That's not good. Every render element in 3ds Max (except for the "Missing Render Element" class) should expose an .elementName property.
We do check explicitly for the Missing_Render_Element_Plug_in class, but if Corona insists on implementing Render Elements without the .elementName property, we might have to add a more general test for the existence of the property. Unfortunately, a lot of things in SMTD depend on that property being accessible. If the element name is accessed in a non-standard way in Corona, that would be inconsistent with every other Render Element in Max.

Can you ask Ondra why these render elements do not expose the .elementName property that every other render element provides? Could this be an actual bug in Corona?"

@Keymaster ? :-)

[Max] I need help! / Memory optimization - discuss please
« on: 2014-12-10, 07:31:17 »
Hi Everyone,

I would like to start a discussion about how people manage memory usage by Corona for big commercial jobs.  Because Corona eats A LOT of memory, and way more than what is practical for most jobs. We are having big issues currently with very standard and simple exterior shots, that when rendering in 5000x5000 pixels use more than 34 GB of RAM...  now the quick and easy tip would be, get 64GB, but that's not a solution.....  similar scenes in Vray use 8GB at the same resolution.

Corona HAS to become more memory efficient one way or another, but due to the mostly bias nature of it I can't figure out what to do different to get some memory back.

My problems:
1. corona use a lot of memory, just by itself.
2. proxy's seem to only be for viewport performance, because unlike Vray corona loads the entire scene into Memory before rendering, no matter what (proxy, xrefs etc), where Vray only loads proxy's as per needed per bucket.
3.... well im already out of ideas here.

But the fact that 5x5 K images are painful to render without too much detail, actual big scenes with of forest etc will become impossible.

Hi everyone,

I was looking for some animation examples of people using Corona, to discuss settings etc, but it's really hard to find.

And the main reason is because not a lot of people do animations yet, but also because they are well hidden mixed in with all the all gallery/wip sections, and spanning over months maybe years in time.

So I thought, why not just make another sub-section under the gallery for Animation? Even split it in 2 if needed, into wip-animation / animation, just like the current gallery.

[Max] I need help! / Overall fastest setup for animation?
« on: 2014-11-17, 14:04:07 »
Hi everyone,

I am wondering if any of you have tried to render out animation in normal "heavy" interior scenes where you have decent settings and a fair amount of passes..

I have tried all (to me) logical options in terms of quality, and pt+pt / pt+hd , bucket or progressive etc, and overall it's just painfully slow, unstable as hell especially when using distributed, when rendering multiple frames locally, sending it to the network is even worse (using Deadline), as I just get errors and crashes.

So I am curious to what approach you fine folks use to get anything out in a reasonable time frame?

Thanks

p.s. using the latest daily build.

Hi everyone,

I would love if I could use the camMod to lock in specific exposure (EV), highlight compression, contrast and white balance per camera.

Currently the cammod seems to have exposure settings but they don't seem to correspond to the render-setting settings?

Anyway when doing different views of different rooms, in the same apartment often I use different settings. Currently I am saving out render presets to make it easier, but a CamMod would make it A LOT easier.

If these settings can already be controlled, please let me know!

Thanks

HEEEEELP!!!

Does no one else get these issues?

EDIT: See max is stuck on 33 passes and corona says 178 ??  (everything is dead as this point)

max and corona seems to agree on where things are at until about 30 passes, then max freezes and the corona framebuffer keeps going! At this point any limitation of pass or time is totally ignored! the screenshot below had a 30min time limit on it.. AGAIN as I have been trying to yell out for more than a week, if I stop it manually max crashes. Either way nothing is saved.

Easiest way to test this is to setup a 25-30K wide by 15K high render and do a crop of about 700x700 px, and render the crop.  This happens locally, using PT+HD, PT + PT, over network..  and DR. IT doesn't matter what method is used..

EDIT2: And no, you did read correctly... 30K by 15K pixels.

HUGE problem!   my deadline is looking seriously grim currently :/

27
As topic says..

I have renders going for 10 hours even though it only takes them 40mins to get to the 150 passes that is the limit, but they don't stop! just keep going.. when I manually stop it it crashes and saves nothing (like mentioned in another thread).

I cannot be the only one experiencing this?! fix?!

BADLY need a solution to this.

Btw: this is on 7.1A hotfix.

Thanks :)

Hey everyone,

I really enjoy the daily builds and for the most part they run awesome.

Anyway I have run into a "bug" that I am not sure how to explain.

Scenario:
When rendering a really heavy scene (close too 200mill poly) max will crash to desktop after corona starts parsing the scene and hit around 10GB of memory used (I have 32 not the problem).

The stable 7.1 alpha build works like a charm, no crash and can use all 30 if it wants to. But it seems there is a memory leak or what ever it is that causes the current daily build (build from the 9th and the 10th both do it) to crash max instantly.

Thats all :)

Hi everyone,

I don't know if it's a "bug" per say, but it's certainly a problem... on heavy scene (really heavy) I very often end losing everything and starting over, because Corona freezes max and never recovers after submitting a render (that works perfectly) but the seconds I hit "stop" or "cancel" max freezes and just cycles into death...  Making test rendering a true pain in the arse.

This happened using DR a few times, but I am also getting it NOT using DR, purely a local render.

Anyone else getting this?

P.S. by heavy scene I am talking 100-130+ mill polygons.

Work in Progress/Tests / Snakebox's <3 Corona Topic
« on: 2014-10-06, 17:29:47 »
Hi everyone,

After having been using Corona for a few months commercially, while lurking the forums here it's time that I create a thread where I can drop my personal tests and work done with Corona. I will be sharing commercial work too from time to time, but as we all know it's not always that easy to be allowed to.

So to start off I want to give you a glimpse of what is coming up first (attached).
