Has anyone built a system with Xeon E5-2686 V3 ES cpu(s)?
I'm looking to build a new single cpu system soonish, and this looks like good price/performance option against i7 (5820k, 6800k).
The turboboost is decent, large cache, many cores for Corona and full pciex lanes if I ever need more than 2 gpus. Also, wouldn't need to OC, so could go for a really silent build.

Hi, I have a similar question, hope it's ok joining in with your topic.

I'm choosing between a single E5-2695 V3 or an i7 5960X (likely overclocked). I realise there's an initial price difference but I'm thinking long term - if I have a E5-2695 in the bag, when I have a bit more cash I'll upgrade motherboard and only need to purchase one other E5-2695 - then I have a pretty powerful duel Xeon system. Is this smart or will I get more performance/use out of the i7? Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Looking at Corona benchmark, the 2695V3 performs similar to 5960X with a good overclock.
Consider you need extra cooling for that, and it will probably be louder. The Xeon can run just fine with a good Noctua cooler and be very silent.
Turbo on 2695V3 seems good enough for single threaded tasks too. Just be aware that ES chips on ebay usually run a bit slower, and often have much lower turbo clock.
But by my local price, the Xeon is two times more expensive, soo here 5960X or even the newer 6900K are clearly price/performance winners.
