Hey all,

due to the long loading times of 3ds max i decided to switch from a normal 2,5" SDD to a M.2 NVMe SSD and share my test results with you.

contestants:
Crucial CT512MX100SSD1 512GB
Samsung SSD 960 EVO 500GB

Textures are all located on an external NAS, Synology DS215j with 85Mb/s transferrate.

System:
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2660 v3 @ 2.60GHz
Asus X99 Pro
Crucial CT8G4DFD8213 32Gb DDR4-2133 CL15
Zotac Geforce GTX 1080 Ti

conclusion:
All programs open between 10%-30% faster if no content will be loaded from the NAS.
Differences in pasing times and geometrie preperation are within reading deviation.

The difference is perceptible but not as huge as the difference between HDD and SSD.

So its up to you if you are willing to spend the money for this speed increase.

Fun tests! :)

When I was working with 3ds max I actually thought that a nvme would be the way to go if you wanted really fast bootups and what nots. Turns out, similarly as you've presumably noticed, it does noticeably help in most cases but the application still "feels" slow.

It is especially noticeable if you've worked with c4d or other apps.

Pro and cons I guess! :)

Yeah, not the boost i hoped for but it was not in vain.

Next thing to upgrade is memoryand NAS. Maybe this will speed up the process. :D

Nice tests, good to see real world performance.

As for improving your work speed a bit further, you could try unlocking your X99 boards bios so that E5-2660v3 could reach higher clockspeeds, thus giving you a bit faster rendering and single threaded speed ;)
