[Max] General Discussion / Re: Doble-sided material
« on: 2014-04-29, 14:57:17 »
Not know how to do something, calling it bugged.. well You sound inpatient.
Do you get angry a lot?

This is the weirdest language barrier effect I have yet seen.

Shell is the best option here, theres also an option with alphamapping and AE, but thats the least efficient way.

Most book papers use 80g/m2 or less for pages, the thickness is literally irrepresentable with physical units in CGI, because it's sub <0.1mm. Sure, carton boards (400+ g/m2) are different league.
Regardless, thick papers would be nightmare to animate in flipping fashion.

Rawalanche's advice is sound. Still, 2sided material is convenient way to have completely different material characteristic on each side, but, not any sort of priority for anyone I guess.

And here I thought Corona was quite sufficient in this regard, because the transition between 0-1 in glossy seems "slower". In Vray, with Ward mode, 0.99 is like completely blurry suddenly.
Maybe this is something that could be alleviated altogether with more advanced ior model, or maybe blend two materials with peak reflection being 1.0 glossy, or simply use some slight scratch map in specular slots
instead of glossy value to give the off-blurry look.

Work in Progress/Tests / Re: Do these books look OK to you?

Is it me, or these books are missing something? ;]

Since most people (including me) just buy these books to never read them I think they are ok ? The important thing that makes them look good on cheap Ikea Expedit/Kallax is there ;- )

These looks good already. I'd just add subtle bump to them.

Will you make softcover books too?

Nice. I love how subtle surface imperfection brakes down reflections. Much much nicer that currently over-used effect of using drastically contrasted dirt/concrete map in reflection/glossy slot//russian style.

[Max] I need help! / Re: mirror mat
« on: 2014-04-24, 02:30:25 »
For a realistic mirror, you need to make a sheet of glass (normal glass) and put a highly reflective metal behind it.

I'm just curious, will this really produce significantly different result than just using the highly reflective metal alone?

I was curious too, but always too lazy to try. I play with thought that it would be noticeable in animation that angles such mirror (stacking those reflections), but over still image, one wouldn't probably notice.
Needlessly, from one asset I bought from Bertrand Benoit (mirror and fireplace), he had that setup (it also had reason for it, dirt was applied to glass panel only).

Could look really quite real...but the 3D people have to go. They literally ruin it. Otherwise good job ! I would correct the green levels of trees a bit down. Either keep the saturation between sky and nature consistent, or tone down the nature.

Shifting is very helpful, but I have to be careful everytime I use it not to overdo it :- ) Can start to look odd faster then vertical correcting if done too much.
I could use a shift lens too... not sure if there's even is any good one for Nikon though.

I've never had single crash of either hardware (slave or master), neither DR spawners or BB servers.

With that said about benefits, it lies with stills foremost. I can schedule 15-20 pictures, and they will complete hierarchically one after one at short periods of time fully automatically. Where one node would take 20 hours, now I can see each one after 2 hours sent to me to my phone.
The non-distributed parts are pretty minimal by now with most renderers (with Vray it is only LC now, and that is circumvent by setting BB server to be the strongest machine, i.e dual xeon for example, so it takes like 30 seconds, while frame will still take 5 minutes).

I wasn't advocating the use of DR on behalf of BB, but "DR+BB", so I don't see the confusement.

The way it works the work is still fully managed by farm controller (BackBurner Manager in this case), so your machine is free to use or quit, but the work is sent to single server only, which afterwards gather the performance for distributed to itself from other slaves, which are running spawners only, but not servers.

This feature was highly wanted back in 1.5Vray and not because everyone was idiot who couldn't do their math. It was so people didn't need to use idiotic "strips" feature.

So it's not superior or worse, but regular alternate workflow which its own benefits.

1 frame per node via backburner is good strategy, but I don't see why it is necessary seen as 'superior'. I hope to see one day DR+BB work together as well, that is workflow I enjoy and prefer a lot.

what about "guess vert" function from vray :) ?
Just throw camera correction modifier on top of your camera. It does exactly the same.

Or use Vray's camera with Corona's mod on top :- ) I like to use Vray camera because I love shift tool.

Oh yeah, I know = ) CC rocks.

Sometimes it is not about references just customer requirements, more transparency, more reflections and so on..

Hah, true :- ) I talked of ideal scenario, and obviously, totally forget of these requirements. It's maybe because I now pass the skyscrappers jobs, each one was nightmare for this reason !! ("Now more...no, now less!")

// Agree with your sentiment, esp. about the ownership. You have mind on right place from my view.

I am only personally ticked with full subcontracting within identical bussiness. "Hey, we have lot of clients recently so we need to give it to someone else but still take margin and provide shitty middle communication" ----) Just pass guys.

On your few sentences about switching, never has it been easier to be on your own. Maybe you're just hard on yourself in this regard and best advice is to just start. At worse you will just bankrupt and die of starvation = )

. I'm not a fan of magic bullet, I think its because the UI looks prehistoric ha.

Wha :- ) I love the UI personally, seems modern to me instead :- D ? Well, I don't use the tools so predominantly now, Peter Guthrie persuaded me to try Lightroom and I now mix Lightroom and Photoshop a lot.

SORRY COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN WHERE FIND THIS LAST OPTION FOR MAT PREVIEW IN MAX 2014..I CAN'T FIND IT..
THANX

I am really not sure what you are asking :- ) I've read it few times but you will need to ask more thoroughly.

- lighting setup (interior lighting) - with some example pics?
- Did you also use render elements for you project?
- render settings..- with some example pics?

-Single HDRi, nothing else (no portals, no anything, no override,etc..)
-No, I don't use any elements in my work (I do use few with Vray, like Z-Depth for animation, but that is)
-Nothing unusual, just keep default. This set was rendered using PT+PT32, only because I simply had the time and performance for it.

Hiring an independent is totally a good idea, and a healthy one for that matter.

Why do you think it is healthy (I am curiously asking, don't take it as snarky question) ?

I believe hiring sub-contractor to do the whole job (if you aren't general agency...but the very same bussiness), is exploiting him basically and in certain aspect, also exploiting the client. It took me time to realize this (everyone needs to eat first), but now I am almost ashamed of my past. So many things could have been done better...
Your client doesn't get the same quality you advertise yourself (could be better or worse :- D actually ), and your sub-contractor doesn't get the luxury of direct communication (so essential for any good outcome and general mental well-being) and full amount of budget.

I stopped counting these retarded offers (I feel quite strongly about this...just way it is). I could give the same fu***** offer to them in return as well. Everyone just want easy money. If there isn't capacity for further work...well then pass or grow.

[This is off-topic :- ) just felt like discussing on it, obviously thread already fullfilled its use]
