I'm afraid it might be impossible to tell what has happened, but if you haven't closed 3ds Max yet, and you are still experiencing this, or if you are able to reproduce this, you can try capturing a minidump file:

Today, I opened the scene and I rendered it. If it happens again I'll do what you say Maru. Thank you :)

minidump wouldnt help for this specific problem, but some instructions on how to reproduce it (video, scene, ...) could!
