Are there any plans to create a default Corona UI theme?
In Max you can switch between them using Custom UI / Defaults switcher. I prefer this over using a custom maxstart.max file. :)
Most third-party renderers provide this, so that's why I was wondering.

With  maxstart.max you have better customization. But yes, Default switcher can be useful

When switching it to mental ray for example, it changes the default light settings to use "Ray Traced Shadows" instead of "Shadow Map".
Or for a better example when you create a Daylight System it uses "mr Sun" & "mr Sky" instead of the default sub & sky.

Afaik Vray has this as well, and it's just nice to have default on Corona without having to set up a maxstart.max file.
This way you can have different units in different scenes for example but 3ds Max is still defaulting to Corona. (Which a maxstart file will try to override)

What exactly does this do?

what it primarily is good for in my opinion is that when you start max, your material editor is populated with this 24 slots of materials, depending on the preset you choose. and i want those to be corona materials, without having to convert them via the converter script.

because this information doesn´t get stored in the "maxstart.max" i can create but in some preferences "medit.mat" file loaded by the chosen ui preference, and buried away somewhere under user/appdata/local/autodesk/blablabla... the preset does that, among other things like defaults for "by layer" or "by object" and stuff like the default type of shadows for standard lights and so on...

vray eventually had that. like much else in 3dsmax it can quite mess up your max, but better to have it than not i guess.

because at the moment even if i choose corona now to be my primary renderer (and save this in the maxstart.max) those slots gets populated with vray materials at startup (because the default chosen before on my computer was max and vray) which then produce error messages of course.

edit: and of course, i could reset that either or edit the chosen preset like i did with an updated "medit.mat" file populated with 24 clean midgrey default corona materials. so if you know where to look you get there, but it´s hmm, awkward like so much else in 3dsmax. all this legacy and new stuff thrown together plus all those user configuration things are killing me. a serious pain!

cheers,

chris.

As far as I can understand reading the replies, making a defult UI theme for Corona is more complicated than just making max automatically convert all material slots into corona materials, but I think alot of users are used to this (from vRay). I'm certainly missing it.

Hi guys ! I do not think that it is complicated issue ...I have just tried make something like this.....We should place it (MAX.corona folder)  into C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max (version)\en-US\defaults  location ...then open 3ds Max session.... choose Max.corona from Custom UI and Default Switcher list ..press set ..and ...vuala..it can be now possible  set  corona renderer and material editor as default set !! Now it doesnt change empty material slots into vray or another engine materials while reseting material editor but keeps only corona materials!! NOTE : this can be run only on max 2014 and higher versions ! Concerning corona version I made this set using corona 3 update 2 version and dont know whether it compatible with older version!
