Hardware / Workstation: Intel Skylake-X or AMD Threadripper
« on: 2018-02-19, 18:00:53 »
Hi,

I am planning to buy a new workstation and wondering If I would go for Intel Skylake-X or AMD Threadripper.
AFAIK MAX is multi-threaded for rendering but all other tasks are single threaded.
Does anyone know if Interactive Rendering is multi or single-threaded?
If the latter I am planning to go for Intel Skylake due to better single threaded performance.
Or will this not be noticeable?

thanks!

Ahh I feel less lonely now, thanks Johan :)
You have requested this a couple of times, did you get any answer ?

nope. Someone suggested to make use of Scene states.
But I am not a fanboy of scene states.

I have requested this for a couple of times.
Would love this feature.

Yep,we will dive deeper in connector too. It changed our workflow tremendously.
Hopefully they will develop integration for Cinema 4D. As this is will be the DCC package at the moment for us to replace MAX in the future.

Cinema 4D has a fairly good content browser that allows for saving of assets - it saves them all in a lib4d file which can get super huge but its very useful. I hope you've explored that option. It is however obviously not as advanced as the connector :)

Hi Niklar, thanks for the tip!

The most incredible tool I use from it is auto-generating the assets. I simply unpack .zip file from 3dSky/DesignConnected/etc..., then drag&drop it into 3dsMax viewport and with menu pop-up it will put it into folder structure (generating "/maps" subfolder and putting all textures there, auto-relinking them), into categories you place, description you write for it, generate a thumbnail file from studio scene I prepared. I also set it up to convert it to Corona :- ).

Wow, i didn't even know that all of this is possible with Connecter. Definitely worth to look deeper.

I'd not say there aren't any alternatives (Deadline, Qube, Muster ...), but they're pretty pricy, at least for my boss ;)

for me too :-) I am familiar with those alternatives.

Hi, so basically you would like to have a warning message that LUT file, specified in the CXR, cannot be found, right?

exactely

Furthermore it would be handy to have one config file which saves tone map and light-mix settings.

not possible with BB, would be handy though.
Haven't found a good alternative.
Even doubting to stay with Max.....

Hi,

All our files are stored on a NAS.
In the Corona Image Editor (CIE) we save a config file of the tone mapping settings for each render we process. LUT's are stored on the NAS as well.
Every workstation (WIN10 Pro) has the same mapped network drives to different folders on the NAS.
For some reason and from time to time windows does not automatically connects to the mapped networks drives.
If this is the case you can open a render in CIE and load the conf file. It will load all settings except the LUT, because it refers to the C drive instead of the mapped network drive.
So an error message will be welcome.
