Hi Rowan, I've attached the minidump.

Here are the pc specs:
PC1 (crashes): 3ds Max 2018, Windows 10 1903, Ryzen 2700, GTX 970 430.86, 32GB RAM
PC2 (crashes): 3ds Max 2018, Windows 10 1903, Ryzen 2700X, GTX 1080 419.67 , 64GB RAM
PC3 (crashes): 3ds Max 2018, Windows 10 1806, Threadripper 1950X, GTX 1070 419.35 , 64GB RAM
PC4 (crashes): 3ds Max 2018, Windows 10 1806, Ryzen 1700, GT 1030 430.86, 32GB RAM

All are running Corona 4

EDIT: added windows update versions
EDIT 2: PC3 actually does crash

My PC has a GTX970 and the other a GTX1080

So, I've actually been able to nail it down to the nvidia denoiser "Fast preview denoise during render" being ticked.

Ticked = crash, unticked = no crash. That explains why resetting the settings causes a crash.

I've tried deleting the optix folder and reinstalling, with no change.

I'm running nvidia geforce 430.86 drivers and other pc with the same problem is running 419.67

I just encountered some strange crashing behavior when trying to Store the VFB after resetting the render settings in the attached file.

In it's current state, the file works just fine, you can Store the VFB without issue. But if you reset the render settings and try to Store the VFB after doing an IR it hangs and crashes max.

I've tried resetting render settings, clearing out the elements, turning the caustics and adaptive light solver on/off, and the crash still happens every time with reset settings.

What's bizarre is that if I open Max without any start file, so it's totally default and switch my render to Corona, the same crashing behavior occurs...

Has anyone else encountered this?

Hey Karnak that's really good info. I'm embarrassed to say I'd never seen the WHEA section, and I'd never thought of checking the Prime 95 logs as I kinda thought, if it doesn't crash it must be stable! Haha.

Well, I'll be sure to revisit this in September when the 3950X comes out.

Hey everyone, I was wondering for those of you running overclocks on your CPUs and RAM what sort of stress testing you guys do to make sure it's 100% solid.

I've OC'd a couple of Ryzens and Intels now for use in the office/rendering, and even with hours and hours of stability in AIDA64 or Prime 95, I routinely would get a crash here or there when rendering scenes in Corona. What's even more annoying is that these crashes can come after 10+ hours of rendering or even like the 3rd or 4th render. From there it's pretty just adjust the voltages until I stop getting the crashes and I'm officially stable.

It'd be handy to find a stresstest that can produce these instabilities before I fire up corona though. Any ideas?

Haha. Thanks Juraj. Really good observation about the shutter speed, I wish I had thought of that originally as it was a bit of a pain to figure out the best compromise on the water originally. Just had to quickly reopen the project and rerender with that advice. Definitely an improvement.

Hey everyone, this is a portfolio piece I worked on last year. I go to this area of Malmo every time I visit, it's such a cool little neighborhood and it seems to be ever expanding. Originally started this project from a photo I took, so it was a lot of fun trying to guess/figure out all the dimensions as the project evolved.

Let us know what you think!

Hi,

Sorry we missed this one earlier. We would genernally expect that the system caches the files intelligently, but this might not always be the case.

So in order for us to investigate, it would be really helpful for us to get a copy of your scene and assets if possible?

Instructions on how to do this are in my signiture, please don't forget to let me know the name of the file which you have uploaded.

Thanks,

Rowan

Hey Rowan, thanks. As is tradition, the problem seems to have gone away after we tried a couple more things. If it returns, I'll be sure to make a test scene and asset folder and send it to you.

Hey guys, this is a private house we worked on at the end of last year. The landscape is kinda imaginary, we were given some freedoms there as well as some guidelines (had to situated on the lake, etc).

Let us know what you think!

I just saw this line in the Trello for Corona 4 bugfixes: "Fix CoronaProxy bad performance, memory usage in some situations"

Does "in some situations" have anything to do with loading proxies over 10Gb Ethernet? We've been troubleshooting a slow to open max file where removing the proxies (held on a server via 10GBe) seems to remedy the problem.

Sorry to bump this but I feel that it got snowed under by other posts.

One of our recent projects was screaming out for caustics with all the glassware and colorful lights, here's the caustic's pass from one of the the cameras. The ceiling spots are supposed to be dichroic lights, faked it with 3 lights with different IES profiles and colors.

*IF* you want to get really accurate with your mowed grass instead of turning the reflection of the grass on or off for the stripes. Instead you should change the orientation of the grass blades bending with each stripe, all using the same material. The mowed grass look is from the mower pushing down the grass in one direction then coming back in the other direction.

Very true, this just seemed like the easiest "one-click" solution.

Can you please explain how you executed the gravel?

Pretty sure it's just one of the included forest-pack presets :)

They just control the strength of the stripe reflection. If you made the gradient perfectly black and white the stripes would be really strong, so we made it grey/white.
