Hi there,

Does portal need only HDR? Or can I use it with sun or light?

You can use portals regardless of what you're using to illuminate your scenes! Please note that you won't always benefit from using it!

Honestly, I am not sure if portals in C4D version work exactly the same as in 3ds Max (but I guess they do). Here is an article:
